The Vuvuzela only started around 8 years ago' date=' they gave it away for free at that stage...why do people say it is a culture of tradition?

[/quote']

they only started manufacturing vuvuzela's 8 years ago but the loyal sa soccer fans were blowing home made trumpets much longer than that.

it is tradition and once the world cup is over it will carry on and the soccer supporter wont have european and some south africans too bother them anymore.Big%20smile

then they must stick to their home made trumpets then?Wink That is tradition....not the Vuvu!

My Point .. exactly ..

we have accepted a noisy lack of culture as acceptable..

I was in Italy last month.. - and in Europe last year..

Only when I came back - did I realised how conditioned to a lack of respect & a lack of culture we have become.......

Its OK to enjoy something - but to become A HOOLIGAN ..

I question.. the culture...

My 2c opinion...

civilised italian fans?

By the reply I can see you having a bad day, but I will not say anything personal to you because I do not know you.

Who said I have cultural intolerance? Just do not like the sound of the Vuvu, that is it, nothing wrong with that.Confused

P.S: Just asked the question why is everyone making this thing a cultural  thing if the Vuvu was only given about 8 years ago.Shocked

ya, all and well, blow your freakin vuvu-crappas. I hate the stuff, and as said before, the supporters blow it the whole game, and what indication does that give to which team your supporting , nadda , ziltch, your irritating players on both sides. So, not only is it irritating, its meaningless as well. now we know why Banana- banana can't win anything, (by the way, they're lucky to be where they are in the Confed cup , which is like a training outing for the likes of spain, brazil, Italy, the noise doesn't allow them to communicate.

ignorance is not  apoint of view

vuvu's have been around for more than 30yrs at football matches.

you just didn't venture into townships back then because you were too cosy living your middle class white lifestyle and enjoying the fruits of other whites telling those "darkies" how to live.

you don't like vuvu's then rather confine your discussion to the braai area with your other white tjommies.

you know fokall about the thing or football culture and suddenly you think you are entitled to a point of view. Thats called arrogance.

but of course you are not a racist nor culturally intolerant. Its all just a misunderstanding. My bad...

I think when its said to be cultural its not in the sense of(example) Zulu culture and more of soccer culture

We have certain cultural things that are cultural for the current generation.

How old must someething be before it can be considered cultural?

I kid that is currently 8 would know about vuvu's his whole life so for him its cultural. . . maybe a bad argument.

It don't really matter what we and 19 567 other ppl think about the Vuvu?s - it'll never be banned, you really think the Gov / Soccer Big bosses have a say when SA Soccer fans start to toi-toi or threaten to burn down stadium, harass / kill spectators.. We don't have a say so just go with it or don?t watch it. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

from wikipedia:

Originally made out of tin, the vuvuzela became popular in South Africa in the 1990s. In 2001, South Africa-based company Masincedane Sport began to mass-produce a plastic version.[1'][2] They require some lip and lung strength to blow and emit a monotonous noise like a deep foghorn or an elephant.[3] The vuvuzela is a feature of matches between big South African soccer teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Chiefs supporters have yellow vuvuzelas, while Pirates have black-and-white vuvuzelas.

Autionlamb - that's mass produced stuff. The originals has been part of football way longer.  And Wikipedia - didn't they also say that David Carradine was killed by ninjas?LOL

While I don't particularly like them, they have been part of football culture in SA for years. FIFA must have known this - and if they don't like it, they shouldn't have given us the bloody thing to host.

but it's the only way we get to play in it. I bet you they gonna try and host it again in 4 years time because I'm afraid this is the last SWC we're gonna play in.

The drone from english premier league games is much the same as the sound of incessant vuvu's on TV.  The only difference is the source of the noise is an "instrument" rather than tuneless middle-aged white men singing.

I haven't been to a game, so I can't comment on what atmosphere it creates, but the vibe in the crowd as we see on TV certainly seems to create a better atmosphere than, for example, the bearded boere sitting at a Bulls game.

The only good reason I say to ban the vuvuzela is because it is distracting to the players.  However, I don't really see how that is possible - sounds more like an excuse used by players that aren't performing.

As for the "culture" question, South Africa in its current state is a cultural infant.  Culture is being developed by new South Africans, based on the radical change in 1994.  South African culture prior to that did not exist.  It is much the same process as the Afrikaners followed to create a culture for a new nation, as American's and Australians have done since occupation of their territories.
