So I'm trying to give the bikes a "major" service...I'm at the stage of

removing the crank and servicing the external bearings for deore and LX

cranks....

This is how it looks at the moment:

A little dusty and a little greasy....

Can i:

1. Kleen Green to remove the dust, mud and gunk and also clean off access grease...?

2. Wipe clean and dry area and re-grease with normal Vaseline....?

3. Do I need to follow guide as shown above to clean bearings and re-grease?

Do I need to do 1, 2 and 3 or can I stop at 1 and refit the crank?

Nothing is out of sorts at the moment. Everything seems very normal and spins nice and smoothly....

It would be nice to know that I cleaned everything....

I cleaned mine this weekend with a bucket of soapy water and a brush. Just make sure you do do not break the seals that that's on the crank arm. Your chain looks nice and spiffy.

I think the Kleen Green on this particular section is a no no...

It might penetrate deeper into the parts that you are not stripping and dissolve the lubricant that you do not want to have dissolved...

I would simply wipe clean as far as possible an then re-grease (not vaseline!!....I do not think it was designed to be a high end lubricant for BB's)...use any other type of motorbike / car grease if you do not wnat to spend bucks on silicone based bicycle greases.

PS: Rather keep the Vaseline ready for when you get fleesed with you next bicycle parts purchase!!LOL

Don?t use any type of degreaser near sealed bearings!

Buy yourself some proper grease - not your local LBS, too expensive. Go to a hardware shop and ask around. Buy a grease with a unique colour - preferably white. Then you can easily see when it is contaminated.

Remove your crank (like in your picture) at least once a month or after EVERY wet ride. Clean all excess grease with a rag, smear new grease on bolts, shaft and contact points and re-fit. Clean excess grease. Grease will tend to leaked out during riding - it?s a good thing since it moves the grime away from the bearings. Just wipe down after each ride.

The sealed bearing should only be wiped with the rag and smeared with a bit of grease - leave it sealed. See how to service sealed bb?s if you want to go that route.

I have followed a basic, regular cleaning (as little water and soap as possible) and grease routine with all my bikes and they all run smooth for long.

Thanks guys.....followed your advice and only kept it to step 1; removing the aangepakte mud and gunk, first with a toothpick and then with so very diluted sunlight dishwashing liquid. Just enough to remove that sand-scratching sound. Wiped clean excess grease and refitted crank....

pity a did not take pick of 'after'....

thanks again...Thumbs%20Up....

also, a friend @ work adviced me to get so moto-cross grease for the regreasing process...blue colour...will see if i can locate some..
