I know hindsight is 20/20' date=' but PVR is 20/20 in High Definition!  If you have yesterday's stage recorded go and have a look at the 20 minutes BEFORE the split.  Very interesting.

Cancellara made a dash to the front about 5 minutes before the split and the commentators (over here) mockingly wondered what he was doing shooting to the front.  The next thing Armstrong gets chaperoned to the front by Popo and the other one (Zubeldia?) to be close to the action.  No Contador, no he has his own guy on the other side!  They are clearly riding as two teams.  Saying that though, it was amateur of Contador and the others to be caught out like that.  Armstrong knew what was going to happen, just like everyone else (Cancellara was told by his team to move forward like the rest of his team, but he listened!)

It was an awesome stage to watch.  That's the way cycling should be.  Unpredictable.

The tour needs la' date=' really?[/quote']

No probably not, it survived just fine the last few years without him...

BUT

After being lucky enough to be present at the 1st and 2nd stages I can confirm that Armstrong was cheered louder than any other rider when he came past and every spectator that i spoke to mentioned how great it was to see LA back and that they hoped he can win.

Point taken but no one person is bigger than the sport and i suppose that is what irks me about la disciples. Many of them would not know a bicycle if it bit them on the butt, but will argue to the death that la is the best cyclist in the world.

Does anyone know what time the stage starts today? Or perhaps have the starting order?

Will Astana start last as the leading team?

AI AI AI ........

Contador was reportedly the rider who failed to keep pace when Columbia's pace at the front of the main peloton started to take it's toll on the bunch.

"When the split happened I was right on (behind) Contador's wheel," claimed Fran?aise des Jeux rider Christophe Le Mevel.

"If it's true there were 29 guys in front he must have been 30th and I was 31st. It was him who caused the split."

I was quite suprised at the positive atitude towards LA, was expecting a lot of negativity (aka on the hub) but was pleasantly suprised.

Team Astana stayed in our hotel (or rather we stayed in their hotel...) and there was always a lot of people hanging around just waiting in hope to get a picture of LA.

IMO there is no such thing as the best cylist in the world, perhaps on 1 given day at 1 given place...but lets not go there again.

Makes you wonder if it was not perhaps part of the Astana plan to create this situation??

Watching LA and Popo trying to encourage the leading group to work together, their actions seemed to be a bit put on IMO, as if they were trying to make it obvious that LA wanted the break to succeed...LA?s lead over AC is FA and should not be to much of a concern, unless of course AC doubts his own ability.
