Tumbleweed Posted July 8, 2009 Share How effective is mtb tubeless? Do you get less punctures than with tubes and slime? Can you use a tube as a last resort if one uses the conversion? quick example: did mashatu a while back with wheels converted with joe's. at the end of each day the tyres would be covered in duiweltjies. at the end of the four-day safari, i think i'd dropped 0.1 bar of pressure! you can pull the joe's rimtape out and put a normal tube in. keep a spare normal rimtape in your bag. Andyr249 Posted July 8, 2009 Share Oh ok. Thanks HR. So if the puncture is too big then do you just go straight to the tube or do you do the repair with that putty like stuff similar to car tyres at the petrol stations?
Free Posted July 8, 2009 Share Just roll some insulation tape on your rim before installing the tubless strip. Then you dont have to carry a spare rim strip.

Tubeless repair kits are available in 'bicycle size' that work the same as those car ones with the fancy screwdriver and little snotstring. They work a treat and IMHO a must have if you go tjoopless. Rocket-Boy Posted July 10, 2009 Share Hope this isnt a hijack, but are all of the roadies running slime or liners? The reason I ask is that the pressure on a road tire is more than on a MTB so wont the slime kind of blow out the hole for a while before it seals? Guest Agteros Posted July 10, 2009 Share Roadies just run HUGE pressures Nothing slimy, no liners!
knievel Posted July 27, 2009 Share What is the best "slime" to use? The original? SLIME or is there a better or cheaper alternative? And, what pressure should a MTB tire be pumped to?
Ratty Posted July 27, 2009 Share If you not a weight weenie use both.Works well. Agree' date=' the weight difference isn't even noticeable anyway...[/quote'] Try 500g's difference!!! I got my bike 2nd hand. I knew it had slime tubes in and for almost a year I didn't get a puncture. Recently I changed to normal tubes for Knysna and found out that all this time I had been riding with tyre liners as well as slime. I weighed the slime tubes with the liners and then also the new tubes and there was a difference of 250g's on each wheel. I can actually feel the difference when riding my bike.Ratty2009-07-27 03:47:
rad006 Posted July 27, 2009 Share What is the best "slime" to use?The original? SLIME or is there a better or cheaper alternative? And' date=' what pressure should a MTB tire be pumped to?[/quote'] I now use OKO and sell it... Am I biased??? No and the reason is this... Ive used slime (Green) and Joes and some of those preslimed tubes and nothing has given me the best service... Most dont work or dry up.... Now every puncture is different so not all failures are due to the product....What I can say is that since ive used OKO no punctures. Im still in the testing phase of it whether it drys up like the others or not...At the end of the day try what you must ie all of them and make up your own mind... Ive moved to OKO and so far so good...
rad006 Posted July 27, 2009 Share Oh also its a cost thing... Joes + Stans are crazy.Ryder,Slime, Doc Blu and OKO are the cheapest.... In saying that the most expensive isnt the best!!!
