I hate it when slow riders get in my way that's why I won't do lap races or races where are technical sections where riders get off their bikes and cause a bottleneck.

Why is it when I get to one of these bottlenecks and just pick my bike above my head and sprint to the front do they shout at me?

For heavens sake its a race which means its every man for himself .... win at all costs or go home. Hey okes its not friggin tifddly-winks!

I take it you did not ride of Sunday - you'd be fuming!

I guess you have a limited number of options:

- get to the front and win

- get to the front and blow up ... and let the following riders curse you

- don't ride races with lots of technical sections or single track (your choice)

- take the issue up with organisers  ... and this is the area where we riders are probably at fault ... or should the governing body (MTBSA?) be circulating a number of recommendations to course designers?

Years ago, when involved in road running and XC running, I drew up a document with a number of DOs and DON'Ts for race organisers. After the race, the association used to mark us according to a scoresheet and give us a report of where we needed to do improvements. If those were not implimented the next year, we lost our position on the race calendar the year after. Later they used to inspect the course a couple of weeks PRIOR to the event.

Can we not encourage this sport to do something similar and POLL the cyclists after the race?

The course designers at Walkerville did not have much lee way regards a route as a lot of track went through pvt land. Here riders can also play a big part by sticking to the track and not littering, leading to farmers being reluctant to agree next time. I'm thankful that there are such events local, as i cannot do the more glamour ones further away.

On Sunday I was often baulked on the single track, technical sections and tricky climbs by slower riders. I could have got up set with them. I could have behaved like the average MTB tjop and shouted "Track" at them. However the reality is we all started at the same time and they got to that point in the race in front of me. Why, because I am weak, unfit and slow. No one else to blame but me for not doing the training.

idrive I suggest you MTFU, train harder and get to those points first, that way you won't have any issues.

A few faster riders came up behind me halfway through one of the single track sections. What they did was to simply pass them. Sure, it meant going off the single track a bit but for a couple of metres it was fine. They were ahead of me and could resume their speed. No shouting or anything. If you need to get past then simply overtake. I know some sections where it was not possible to do that but then that is life and we must just wait until there is a passing opportunity.

As for that one section after the join every I saw got off their bikes and carried them through the rocks.

Sure its a race, but if there is a bottleneck near the start I believe you should wait for your turn, if everyone stampeded you would still be in the same place only cause more congestion. Its like a Taxi attitude, its fine to pass on the dirt or force their way to the front in the wrong lane, but the only reason they benefit is because other road users adhere to the rules. If we all did it we would not get there any quicker, just more frustrated. So I-drive, start near the front or ride faster...and if it backs up just wait your turn..Wink
