XT rear derailer

Rothenburg

Recommended Posts

I appear to have stripped the thread on the backing plate of my XT rear derailer when I replaced the jockey wheels. The shop is now suggesting I buy a new derailer at R1000 !(no surprise)Cry

Any suggestions - wondered if anyone had a "broken" XT rear derailer that may have an ok backing plate.

A broken derailer is what you need. That thread is 3mm (I think) and to find a helicoil that size is difficult. Also, the plate is too thin for a successful helicoil or vasbyt (thread insert) operation.

You could try drill out the thread and glue a nut in the outer side of the plate and try finding a suitable bolt as the original would obviously be too short, but it is a long shot. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If you have access to a lathe it would be quite easy to turn a bush that does the same as the above, then you could use the original screw. For

R1000 you should find a machine shop willing to do this.

Even a small Nylock nut will do as you will be able to regulate the tension. (Nylock is a self locking nut with a small piece of nylon inside the nut that prevents the nut from turning loose on the bolt. We use them in very small sizes on the model RC helicopters.) Any specialist bolt and nut supplier will be able to help you with the suitable cap screw or bolt.

For an engineering fix, what you need is a nutsert. They're made by PEM. It's a flat captive nut used in sheet metal work. If you can't find one, PM me and I'll see if I can hook one up.

Edit: looks like this

I should have an old buggered one at home (the baking plate is fine) that you can have.

That is assuming they are the same/compatible
