bruce Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 bruce: I have also personally asked BikeMax if he would be keen to do a test with and without Qrings on the set of athletes and unfortunately at the time Peter couldn't commit. It would still be a good idea' date=' and can be easily monitored in a environment like Sports Science Institute with the aid of power meters. I've said it before and I'll say it again though. The whole "train with power crowd" comes across rather agressive in their approach in stating "training with power is the only way" and "if you don't train with power you will never reach your potential". Please don't forget not everyone has R6000 upwards to spend on one of the devices, be it PowerTap, SRM, Polar etc. This shouldn't stop them from looking at lower cost alternatives to improve their performance. Just my 2c [/quote'] Nice paper for a Biokinetics/biomechanics to write! Fattie, I agree with you. A power meter is a pretty expensive tool, and it is not a pre-requisite for improving performance. I apologise if I come across as aggressive - I really do try to keep a balanced perspective on things!

Just my 2c [/quote'] Thats a bit harsh fatty ... There are lots of devices that might be worth testing but to do it fairly and objectively requires a lot of time and effort. I always look at the science and basis for something lke this before committing to a test. In this case the basis for improvement does not stack up - improving cycling efficiency as a result of changing pedal phase is not possible and so on this basis I have declined the kind offers to test. As for being aggressive - as Bruce says, sorry that you feel that way. A power meter is nothing more than an accurate measuring tool, it does not make you faster, but will help you to be more efficient in your training and analysis if used properly - how you train to get fit is up to you. I do not recall ever seeing anybody state that it is the only way to reach one's potential, but I will say that it is likely to make the process faster, and on top of that you have a better chance of knowing you have reached it when you get there.

Just my 2c [/quote'] Fatty your 2c is worth its weight in gold!!!!!!!! The whole powermeter thing is just another attempt to make bicycling an elitist sport. Too many people had HR monitors, hell even plebs like me has a S725X. They just had to find something "new" to take training out of the hands of the masses. They can use their watt creating shiny devices as much as they want to and please themselves by creating enough power to illuminate Hillbrow or Seapoint. I will keep on enjoying my Polar and I will keep on admiring the guts of the entepreneur who singlehandedly took on all the power tapping devices by offering an alternative!!!!!!!

Hendrik Petoors Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Did they have powermeters in 1546????? euraquila welcome to the world of the elitists sport called bicyling!!!!!!

Oom H, I think you should go back and check up on your history and order of events Here is a clue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate_monitor and another one http://www.srm.de/usa/mobileleistung.html
Hendrik Petoors Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Clueless except the invention date ...... Polar = 1977 and SRM = 1986, so ............... my deduction is that the "whole powermeter thing is just another attempt to make bicycling an elitist sport" ........ that only picked up speed and became more popular in recent years with the cunning marketing ploys of the elitist cyclists who realised they may just snatch the market away from the HRM pundits!!!!!!!! teee heeee!!!!!!!! Hendrik Petoors Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 This John Heywood was quite a character, seems he even predicted the successes of the HRM in 1546 (see the quote in bold!!!!!)............. A hard beginning maketh a good ending. If you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be. Many hands make light work. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. Rome was not built in one day. The loss of wealth is loss of dirt, as sages in all times assert; The happy man's without a shirt. Those who agree with us may not be right, but we admire their astuteness. (he even had Hendrik Petoors in mind!!!!! teeee heeeee)Wedding is destiny, and hanging likewise. When all candles be out, all cats be grey. Would ye both eat your cake and have your cake?
