I need to buy new pedals for the mtb. I was fairly happy with the spds I had before, but I want to explore my options. I'm big (108kg's) and generate a bit of HP, but I'm pretty smooth and in general I don't break bikes.

I DO like a heavy release action, because when I unclip, I tend to fall, and when I fall, I fall like a tree... ;) I've never struggled with getting my feet in or out when required.

So, what would you recommend? I don't care about weight. Well, not really... ;)

I am a 95kg rider (read "big boned") and have been using the Crank brothers Candy SL's for a few months now. Add to the 95kg a pack of about 5-10kg's pending what I am lugging in my backpack to work.

Good pedals so far with a "safe" engagement. The Shimano pedals I have had before would unclip if struck by a rock .... the Candies have not acted in the same manner.

I'm a big-rider myself, and never had a moment's problem with the Crank Brother's Candy C's...

Though - it must be said - I'm quite the opposite. I've just replaced mine with Shimano M540's because of the heavy release action of the Candy's....

Been cycling with Shimano for over 10 years and never looked elsewhere. The added benefit is the fact that you are compatible with spin bikes at gym.

My partner uses Time and he struggled when it wasn't serviced. I serviced mine the first time after about 25,000km - its been a year now and still happy.

Get XTR pedals and then you set your tension to release and clip in. I have used LOOK and Crank Brothers, but the Shimanos are the best.

I am 110kg and have been using Time Atac pedals for a few months and have not had a single glitch even in some thick mud.
