OK, after Friday's litte discussion about mud and seeing the Conrad Stoltz solution....I thougt I'll give it a bash before cycling the Burger Stellenbosch MTB race (we expected serious mud after recent rains!).

16:45PM   So I got hold of an OROS bottle (nice big sized neck) which I cut as follows...

I eyed the position it had to fit in and the affected area it had to protect from musd and made few snips here and there to ensure the chain and crank are not catching anywhere...

Area to be covered:

Two cable ties did the trick...

Went to the race on Sat morming to eagerly find some serious mud...was not dissapointed!!

After pics:

Area below cover: i.e front deraileur that usually start giving shifting probs when seriously covered in mud / gunk /grit etc. You can see on the picture...after 42km of the best that the western cape winter can offer...not much gunk build up!!

So, I'm quite chuffed with this simple, yet very effective solution!

Total cost: 0.1Zim$   Total time: ~15min tops  Difficulty rating: Any monkey can do this - not just grease monkeys!

There was no shifting probs whatsoever, the palstic was soft enough to move with the deraileur where needed!

Watch this space for MKII - an improved bling bling carbon fibre version coming soon to a store near you!! But on the other hand, If Conrad Stoltz is not worried about the looks...then why should we? Just throw away after the race and make a new one next time?

Well done Cassie, this is so awesome, it is quite amazing that one cannot get a manufactured version of this anywhere, it just seems so simple.  If you do make something more more permanent, I will be firts in line toe get one from you.

Well done!

Yip, I was truely amazed at how efficient such a simple design actually work!!

BigH...try this contraption and let me know.....

I've got a bud who can perhaps do this in carbon fibre...but then - the disign is so simple...It might not warrant any costs spend on pwerfecting a mould...

Just use and throw away and use a new one.

there was a company in the UK who used to make neat little rubber boots to cover the front derailleur. for the life of me I can not remember the MFG, but it was in the days when Crud were starting out and mudguards were all the craze... will try and pull up the info from the archives, may be of some help ;)

Lizard Skins used to make all kind of booties and things.

Nevermind the Oros bottle' date=' how did those tyres behave in the mud? Shouldn't that be a bigger concern?[/quote']

What do you mean?

Those tyres are great!! I haven't had a single problem so far...run them quite low pressure as well. They grip like k@k on a wolkombers....and shed mud quite nicely.

what you suggest I replace them with one day when they are worn?
