Can anybody give me some advice on a MTB wheelset?  I am looking to buy a wheelset that I can use for XC racing.  I see that CRC have a good deal on 08 Mavic SLR wheels for about R5800.  I weigh about 80 kg's.  Is there anything else that anybody can recomend in that price range/quality, or is this an excellent deal??

Thanks

I recently bought ZTR Olympic rims with Hope Hubs. They're quite light and I think good value for money, compared to a good set of DT Swiss or XTR. Also, super easy to do tubeless conversion on these rims Paid about R6000.00.

They attract a lot of attention, but I must say the loud noise from the rear hub takes some getting used to - sounds like a fishing reel. Must say, I love my wheels and would reccomend them.

add about 15% for tax and those are a nice strong set of wheels.

Might also think about their option to build you own custom wheel.

hope hubs with dt spokes etc. . .

If I was able to get some nice new wheels, I would go Hope Pro II hubs with ZTR 355 disc rims and DT Comp (or Supercomp) spokes with brass nipples).

For a bit of bling, you could colour code the hubs and alu nipples. (But you get durability problems with alu nipples, I hear).

Mavic wheels look great, but you often hear of freehub body problems. Spokes are expensive and parts are often not available. If you import the wheels, you also have no local warranty back-up.

I love my Hope Pro II's that I have on the Trials bike. Will be getting a Pro II wheelset for my other bike as soon as I can afford it. You miss the noise when it's not there.

matchstix: where and for how much you source your red hopes? LBS quoted me between R2k7 and R2k9 for a rear 150mm, 12mm disc hub. CRC has them for about R1900 incl shipping to your door.

I weighed 85k's when I had a Olympic wheelset. Had one on my ML and one on my RX. Both were ridden hard. Did jumps and drops with both and they outlasted the bikes. Wouldn't recommend them for hard riding, but they can stand their ground without hassles.

At 80k's for XC riding they will be perfect.

Hi. Having ridden Mavic, ZTR and now XTR, I honestly think are all great. If I had to choose one set for life it will be the XTR's. They're light, stiff and very strong. They are also simple to maintain and give little problems. Best value is probably XT as they're only 100 g heavier .
