It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that from December 2009, the Standard Bank Cycling Club will cease to exist.

We have decided to focus our efforts and channel the funds used to support the club towards our charitable and social investment responsibilities. Thus, events such as Cycle 4 Kids will take up all our 'cycling' focus and will utilise all the funding that has been made available to us.

We thank you for cycling in our colours and wish you safe cycling.

Kind regards,

Crofton McLaughlin

Standard Bank Cycling Club Chairman

So...where to now?

We are from around the Dome area...so we will apply to either Cresta or CycleLab, I suppose!

Am also a member of SB Cycling Club, and live in Oaklands (near Rosebank). Am thinking of a club that has a base closer to home, maybe Capri Wheelers.

Has anyone else got any suggestions?

Hi Michael.  Sad to see a club shut down.  However, I can tell you that I have been a member of Cycle Lab for about a year and have been pretty happy there.  They are a big club and that has its negatives but they are pretty organised and at least on club rides there are enough people to make a bunch and you feel safer.  Also the ThinkBike guys help to control traffic.

I tried out at Cresta Wheelers.  I know everyone has their own ideals but my personal issue with Cresta was a policy to stop for EVERYONE that has any kind of problem (flat tire, chain coming off etc).  That is great for the person who has the problem but it is ANNOYING if you are just getting into a rhythm and you have to stop for 10 minutes.  Also makes the rides take longer and if your bike is properly tuned and your tires are correctly inflated etc, shouldn't happen often.  And if you are like me, you need to RIDE HARD so you can do other stuff on the weekend and not spend all of Saturday with the club!

Then on a practical level, I would say that in terms of traffic to your club, if you are like me your are usually late getting out of bed, slow to eat your breakfast and then in a rush to get there in time!  So a nice easy road like Witkoppen is going to be better than Beyers with all its robots.

Just my 2 cents!

In exactly the same situation and chatted to Crofton about it this morning on our ride.

Joining a new club will involve an outlay of at least R 1k so the question is, do you race enough to warrant joining a club to obtain the required licence ? If you only enter 2/3 races a year, rather pay the extra R30 per race that CGC/CSA *cough* rip-off *cough* from those who are unlicenced.

I doubt I'll be joining a new club.

Why can't the Std Bank Club commitee approach another significant club [such as C/Lab] with an attractive offer to take over memberships ? Just a thought ... seems a waste to not try.

Didn't the Harmony Club go through a similar issue some years back ?

Agree about the R30 ripoff, but R1k is very little to pay for a full set of kit, FREE rides every weekend with backup vehicles etc etc
