JB a quick question on hubs. With a cartridge bearing unit one obviously replaces the cartridge bearings when they are toast.

With an XT or similar unit you can replace the balls and the cones - what about the bearing races in the hub? I recall years back having a Dura Ace hub that got water in it after a long race in the rain - stuffed the one race totally.brussel2009-10-11 06:56:31

I did check SKF and so far nothing - will phone bearing man on monday

OK so how do the flange dimensions differ on XT vs DT 370's

ie can I just swop the hubs and keep the spokes?

You should never re-use spokes after they've been taken off a hub. You'll disturb their set and they'll start breaking.

But, some people nevertheless do this.

Spoke Lengths

Using a nominal rim for both an XT and DT370 rear wheel the spoke lengths look like this.

XT Wheel:   Left 263.2   Right 261.7

DT Wheel:   Left 263.7   Right 263.2

The discrepancy on the right is too large to use the same length spokes on both wheels.

I have a set of DT swiss 370 hubs and the freewheel bearings have been making noise for some time. I decided to belatedly open them up and hmm not good.

The bearing up near the spokes was full of gunk. So I cleaned and greased it but it is pretty shot. The rollers are dull and the race has a lot of wear.

here is a pic of the bearing I am talking about

the wheel still worls, but freewheeling makes a rough noise, there is play in the freewheel and I think I may have to do some tlc.

So how much does a new freewheel cost?
