Ride whatever you comfortable in.

Except a camelback and peak on a road bikeWink we draw the line at that massive breach of style.

Here's a tip dynamite

Choose one foot that you will put on the ground when you stop, and only ever use that foot to disconnect. i use my right foot, no matter what, and now its instant - i can get that cleat out and on the ground in split seconds. I also used to hit the tar quite often, but have not yet since some one told me this tip.

30 min off per 100km for cleats ...... then why bother.

You can also get pedals that you can clip in on one side, but its like a normal pedal on the other side.  2 of my friends have this and its given them a lot more confidence.  When riding on the jeep track they are clipped in, but if they are riding some technical sections they can use the normal pedal.

Riding with cleats when you are a beginner can seriously damage your confidence.   you need to learn how to handle a bike first.

When I first started riding with cleats I had "cheapy" ones and the moment they got any dirt or mud stuck in them I couldn't unclip and it made me really nervous to even attempt anything technical.  once I upgraded however it was a different story and slowly but surely built my confidence up again.
