Heart rates are individual. i'm reasonably fit and 44 - if i was goin uphill at 143 bpm i wudn b workin at all. 150 is where it starts for me.

It's important to know your min and max and where u are relative to that. wat the other guys bpms are is not relevant to u.

160 is a fair bit  up - but do u know ur max? i'd get that level if i was takin whasp gels or othr high caffeine stuff.

Of course higher heart rates are indicative of larger willies.

220 less age is not v accurate.

Try to work out wat u can do but have somethin to clear up the vomit.

My max (& i've bin there recently) is 181.

Restin heart rate 48 is pretty good and is more an indication of fitness - the average adult not exercisin is 70.

But look i'm just an intrsted amateur - search on the Hub / web for more stuff on this, there's loads.

38 years young.
Resting HR 41 BPM
Get my HR to 197 very easily and even when I race I can sustain it at 180BPM for an hour and a half.

Everyone is different hey.. Im 28 old max is 185bpm and resting 45bpm  I cant stay in the 180's for long thats like 95%+ for me.. I only get that when Im gunning steep climbs or in sprints.. or every second day up kloofnek

Haha, no that is a lot of had work. What I realised a litte while back was that no matter how much I rode - longerdistances and got "fit" I was still not able to go fast without my HR going through the roof. I did a couple of short races (did the half distances like 45 or 35 km) Instead of always having to pace myself so much.. then I realised that I couldnt stay with the front guys for 5 minutes they just ride to fast and I'd blow withing 20 minutes at that intensity. So I realised its not all about endurance but also about strenth, Im slowly getting stronger, but I wil probably only be strong next year this time. Its like they say, Quality not quantity. If its not hurting its not helping..you just maintain.

Oh by the way, we do kloofnek twice. twice a week and a 8x one minute on 30 seconds off intervall and then 10 minutes recover, then another 8 times. That bitchslaps you like nothing youve felt! I guess Im still getting stronger, Im hoping to get withing 30 minutes from the front guys by next year. but hey, lets try enjoy the present.20090924_091121_kloofnek.jpg

Slowbe Im Using a Garmin forerunner 305, nice cause you can wear it on your arm when running or on bar when riding and the display is nica and big. It cost about R2500 (there was one on the hub this week for R1500!! go look in classifieds.

Help me, I will try help you.. hehe

Ive been riding mtb for 13 years, and Im only now starting to understand what its about (still learning though and  there are lots of guys on here that knows a lot more than I do.

you have to train  Endurance. Long 3 hour plus rides once a weekend.

then theres anarobic zones- "intensity" intervalls and hills.

Intervalls can be for Vo2 max  which are shorter all out efforts. this increases your Vo2max(huh)  then theres "lactic acid threashhold" intervalls which are hard efforts lasting a bit longer. (google how this stuff works its interesting)

and then I guess theres strenth. I do a little bit of running, squats etc and the kloofnek which is 20 mins warmup 10 minutes of hell followed by 20 minutes recovery and then again, 10 minutes up. Its nice cause you cant "spin" this hill, so find a steep one near your house so you have to push hard, kloof is perfect as even if im in big sprocket at the back Its hell (got a compact crank, on Mtb, dont use granny ring) you have to push a hard gear and maintain it for 10 minutes. My heart rate goes up to 95-98% every time.. it is ***...but you get stronger like that. if you dont have a long hill, do hill intervalls.. warm up then see how far up a hill you can go for say 4 minutes. then freewheel back down, repeat, up for 4 minutes.. do 4-5 of these.
