For the second time in a year my flex plate on my GT i-drive broke. This is apparently a consumable part on the bike but surely this is desgn fault.

What I want to know are there any other riders that have had similar problems or have a opinion?

You mean the dog bone?

It's designed as a fail safe part, rather break that instead of the pivots. View it in the same light as the derailleur hanger.

But if your breaking this piece regularly, your probably riding the bike beyond its intended use.

When I had my GT I always carried a spare. Did have to use it once (in a year) so it may be classed as a consumable. I know of guys who've broken them 3 or 4 times.

I broke 1 at the epic, but it was well over a year old already. I do agree that it is a design fault. Surely they could've come up with a better design. That said I don't mind riding with a spare since it's quick to replace if it does break.

If you build a bike in such a way that you feel the need for a whateveryoucallthatjunk needs to be used to "protect" your pivots then you are doing something wrong !!! This is the worst design I have ever seen in my life and yes you are right to say that he most probably use the bike "beyond " it's intended use . It's intended use was on Tar roads and not on dirt .

um... I think the i-drive is just the system used on the marathon?

smiley36.gif ok. I thought the old FS of theirs was the I drive and the new the Marathon. I rode the Marathon the other day. Didn't ride it for more than 3km but I quite liked it...

I like the idrive design, you don't, thank heavens for choice. And the ability to disagree - amicably :-)

And yet the replaceable derailleur hanger has become almost universally accepted as a simple solution to another 'problem' area.

Many forks and shocks have lockout facilities and yet this feature is also designed to 'fail' (yes I know, not break) in cases of extreme loading.

Very few design features/solutions are out and out "wrong". Not liked by some, accepted by others :-)

I have an iDrive on my alu marathon and did manage to break the flex plate thingy but it happened after I started jumping the bike. For big jumps go buy the Force. It is also iDrive but has a big, strong, heavy steel thingy instead.

The marathon is a low travel suspension bike designed for marathon's not bombing downhill over big drop offs.

hmmm... Wonder if the one on the Force would work on the Marathon? Just out of curiosity...

How about welding a piece of 25x25 angle in there ?

Oh look, a pragmatist smiley36.gif

Or maybe just stop mucking about and buy a Morewood. If you break that you're a special case.
