If you stick to the Hub and follow the great advice given...you'll be fine...

 

Oh, and a dash of common sense as well...

it takes some patience, soon as you think you are making progress a new obstacle will have to be overcome, that is what makes building your own bike so exciting!

If I buy a front shock, will I need a steerer length which is the same as my current mtb or will it depend on the geometry of the new frame?

It depend on the geometry of your frame, your frame size, and most NB what type of bike you're building. U dont want to buy a 150mm travel shock for a XC frame becos that'll just stuff up the geometry.

A stand is handy but not necessary

 

Torque wrench (BBB is fine)

 

BB tool

 

Cassette tool and chain wip.

 

Chain tool

 

Cable cutters

 

pliers

 

Grease and lube

Dont forget getting small bits like cable ends and ferrules..i agree with mampara a stand makes things much easier..

Building it up from scratch is a great way to make it just how you want it. I have just done a similar thing with my road bike. Put on the wheels, components, colour of handle bar tape and saddle that I want. Would never be able to buy it like it is from any shop.
