Depending on the kind of pedals' date='try practising with ordinary takkies first,i had a hard fall initialy and saw others fall worse..Remember,your front wheel is usually lower than it feels, and feathering the rear brake will bring u down if u went past the balancing point

I'm running Shimano DX flats with the long pins, it's almost like being clipped in. My last pair of DC shoes lasted 4 months.

That should be fine, losing your balance while clipped in and on one wheel could be painfull..Once you get the height and balancing right,it can be pretty fun/usefull,and looks cool too!

Its actually not in the pull! The trick to get it to the right point is in the leg kick...almost like you are kicking your bike away from u. Use your legs to adjust...and the brakes if you go too far over. Also keep your body back and high...gives you better balance.

I rode Rietvlei 2 weekends ago, and it's a great venue! One of the best I've ridden so far. When are you organising a Hub ride?

I think this is actually the problem. It feels like the wheel is high, but I'm not looping out yet.

Will see if I can take a video clip this afternoon to help me figure it out.

Great topic. I've been trying this for 2 years and no luck. But what I do believe in is the correct bike. You can't teach yourself to manual with a XC bike for instance. It must be easier if the bike has higher of further reaching handlebars to allow a pivot point somewher behind the seat without to much front wheel lift.

I'm starting to think the Trials bike may be the wrong bike to learn on. The front end is very low, so it's difficult to get to the balance point smoothly. I have to put a lot of force into lifting the bike, and that often unsettles me already.

The balance point is also a problem for me. When you reach it, it feels as if you become weight-less. It freaks me out completely, and then I chicken out. I did manage to double my manual distance today, so I'm now doing about 4 meters instead of 2! smiley36.gif

I'm going to keep at it though, I'll need it for 4X racing. Tomorrow I'll take the Chumba on to the BMX track and see if I can get a manual going over a few of the bumps there.

DarrenG is right. The key is pushing the bike away from you. In the videos you will see the rider doing sort of a weird pelvic thrust to keep the wheel up. That sounds so wrong. Anyway, by doing this "pump" every time the wheel feels like dropping you actually push the wheel up again when you extend your legs after the pelvic thrust.

Put a really short stem on your Chumba' date=' and then just practice... it takes ages.?

Great, like I don't spend enough with you lot already! I'll see if I can stop by tomorrow for a stem and a spin around the pump track.
