AngryAngryAngryAngryI have no time for A#SEH#LES like this' date=' they wonder why they get knocked over.....trust me, they don't own or rule the road AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry[/quote']

You are right...NOBODY OWNS the road...so why do people accept that Busses and taxes can do what they want and carry on like THEY own the road?

Do you also call THEM "A#SEH#LES" ???

It is not ONLY the cyclist that is in the wrong, it is everything that happens on SA roads, from pedestrians to motorcyclists etc...

We will never be able to fix this, as long as the LAW spend their time on trivial stuff and not enforce SAFETY...ie spend more time on fining people for safety stuff rather than easy targets....

coenie, we are all adults as you can only get a drivers license at the age of 18.

I am the first to agree that law enforcement is non-existent and the caliber of traffic officers leaves a lot to be desired.

However, we are not babies and need to be baby 'sitted' by traffic officials. We need to act responsibly and have a conscience and, yes, this goes to all forms of traffic on the roads, not just cyclists.

The bottom line is that if we all can respect the laws of the road then this will be a better place for us all and it starts with ourselves!!  If we as individuals start acting responsible and doing the right thing, it will have a knock-on effect!!!

Be Safe!!

Yes I do!

Where I live, it is a popular cycling area due to the lack of taxi's. Yet on any given morning on my way to work, and in the evenings on my return, the roadies are riding there 3-4 abreast, and do not budge when cars approach. Unacceptable!!

I don't mind if they ride next to each other....if there are no cars approaching, otherwise ride in single file.....otherwise suffer the consequence of road rash.

.......and we have a cycle path, which the MTB's manage to ride on.

Silly roadies. If they want to cycle while chatting to their fellow cyclist...they should really do mountain biking...really. simple. No issues. No breaking laws. No angry photographers. no bitch and moan thread on the hub.

Captain Slow, we are on the same page, I think.....

I just think that this whole thing about riding side by side, skipping red lights etc is blown out of proportion...let me give you an example.

This morning I am driving to work, at a intersection I see 2 cyclist stopping at the red light..VERY good(although this action nearly killed them) and here is why....(now, just hold a sec, I am NOT saying they should have skipped the light)...so....

They are standing on the far left, next to the left turn only lane for the cars. It more dangerous for them to be in between the cars.

They wait and the light turn green, the cyclist take of and want to go straight...the car want to turn left...sees them and stops...cyclist go...car from the other side of the road, wants to turn right and since car 1 has now stopped, the other one GOES...and "did not see the cyclist, I think" and nearly kills them...

Now here is my POINT..had the cyclist, gone while all the lights were red, yes they would have gotten up people like Bigh's nose BUT it would have been safer for them.....

I do NOT say jump every light and carry on like a idiot...everyone should just understand that cyclist ride the way is feels safest for them.

The same goes for a side by side on a sunday morning in a quite road, surely a little hoot for a car will signal the cyclist, and I hope they will respect the request and go single file...I sometimes drive down a road where kids are playing soccer in the street...I slow down and wait for them to get out the way and carry on....

We all just need to chill.

coenie, if these cyclist knew how to ride and if they had their drivers license the legal way they would have stopped at the light and stood in the far left of the going straight lane. If you were in your car where would you have stood?

Captain Slow...you do not know the intersection, ..I cycle down that way and have tried what you said, almost got killed, did what they did this morning, almost got killed, now I go when ALL the lights are red...as the the intersection also have a "slip" road that is NOT controlled by lights and if you do what you suggest, you end up between the cars(in the middle of the road) and then you are stuffed.....

I agree. We all need to stop calling each other fools, A#SEH#LES, idiots, morons and the like.

Do it to the person's face, not all safe and anonymous on the Hub or through a closed car window at some woman. Sometimes drivers get distracted - anyone can make a mistake (I know none of us have ever made a silly mistake while not fully focused on driving our cars. We are obviously above that).

If you ride defensively, you will be aware of what is going on around you and anticipate problems before they arise.

Gasping, well said....ride, drive, run etc defensively...and if we stop pointing out the little mistakes OTHERS make we will have more time to promote our agenda rather then trying to demote other people's attitude etc.

nuff said, it is Friday going for a coffee...

I heard the pro's train without helmets in Europe' date=' it can't be true? [/quote']

gasp, shock, horror?really?

Yes, they do!  I have even started doing it myself because I slavishly follow everything the pro's do.  I'm planning to start winning like they do too, but that plan is not going so well.

Willehond, that must save you at least 260g in weight?

Willehond' date=' that must save you at least 260g in weight?[/quote'] Weight?  Nope, it's about practicality.  Fitting a helmet over a balaclava is difficult.  Ruins the style points.

My 17.3c worth...

There is no excuse for riding badly - the "cars drive badly and taxis drive badly so I can ride badly" defence is as stupid as using touch paper to wipe your ass.

The only behaviour you can control is your own. Ride/drive/fly defensively - it's in YOUR best interests as it is YOUR life. "ITS MY F*CKIN RIGHT TO RIDE HERE AND I'LL F*CKIN RIDE HERE IF I WANT" means diddly squat when you get sqashed by a truck.

Personally I ride using logic rather than laws to govern my riding style. Stop streets and robots are optional depending on street hawkers/time/traffic flow etc.

SA roads and SA drivers (in general) are not very good - pick your roads and ride as if everyone is trying to kill you.
