20091029_055411_3.jpgHi

Guys

I have a set of shimano LX deore shifters on my wifes

mtb . Im not sure of the year

Reasantly they have begun to skip on gear changes.

Does anyone know if they are repairable or would it just be better

to get them replaced ?

Also what is the H AND L used for??

I have attached pics .. hope someone can help out.

Regards

Hi

cbrunsdon

Thanks for the reply . The bike has just come from a services . I told them my situation and after

looking at it , they told me that the parts inside are worn.

Hence the query if they are repairable. They are not sure but they don't think that is repairable.

I think that's its most probably because its an old type of shifter.

Thanks again

I dont think its cause they are old, cause you cant really fix anny shifters.. once they go  they go.. BUT!!! I have found that the grease inside mine became so contaminated with dust that it became thick and sticky. The shifter has a engagement pawl like a freehub, now If the grease is to thick then the pawl cant spring back to grabb the next tooth.. ah no use trying to explain..

Tony, heres what to do.. Open your shifters up  CAREFULLY..!!!

shift into the easyest gear and undo your back wheel so you can shift through the casette. OK.

Take the top part with the indicator off. There should also be some screws at the bottom around the edge of the casing, look for small Philips screws.. DONT UNDO A major one that looks like its holding anything important cause once thats open you can chuck that puppy..

Ok once its open and the working parts exposed, spray the thing with Q20  you basically want to flush it out.. so shift through the range a couple of times and repeat spray- repeat... once youre done, blow it out with a compressor or just dry it as best you can..leave open with pan underneth to drip dry.. You should get your "clicks" back.

good luck.

AAAH!!! firefox you sh*t!! I just typed a full thing on the H _ L and it got deleted

Tipically when I try type that it would work..

The L and H stands for High and Low- Leaverage.

the low leverage gives less power, but more cablepull, so you also get more clerence of the rimm by the pads. but better feel.

On the high, It just changes the angle slightly, and gets more leaverage, so you get more power, more spongey feeling and less cablepull ..

Your bikeshop did not know that??? come on..name and shame em!

I agree with Bos. Those shifters can be saved. Bos did an excellent explanation but I'd like to add two things. 1) Squirt Q-Whatever in there until it runs clear.

2) Replace the cable as well. Lots of friction in the cables contribute to slipping ratchets.

Once you've done this, you'll be amazed at how nice those oldies shift again.

I did something very similar to what Bos described on my shifters, and it worked a charm. Amazing the muck that gets in there. Hope you get yours working!
