Had a similar problem...then I changed bikes, and the creak persisted. OK, then it had to be the shoe!!! Removed the cleats, cleaned the crud off  everything and...Bob's your uncle...creak gone!!! Thumbs%20Up

Agree with MichealH here.  It can be the cleat on the shoe that makes the noise you hear.  It would not gurt to have the pedals serviced as well (take it you have Shimano MTB pedals?

You get Castrol LMX Grease but it might shake the bank a bit.

I would say take the pedals to a bike shop to service and replace the bearings on pedals...

Just to add in my .02

It can also be some dirt/sand in one of the cable run things on your frame... I had a creak when pedaling and it was just the front derailleur cable rubbing sand against the frame mount.

What pedals do you have - I reckon they are the culprit. You need to open the pedals and grease the axle - please do not use q20!!!Your entire pedal will squeek if you have q20 between the cleat and body.Your pedal should be clean and dry - no lube other than a tiny bit on the spring' date=' but wipe off excess.

Shimano road pedals

Will check the pedals

Any other suggestions for grease then? Like motor grade type or not?

Ok narrowing down the problem

Regreased the pedal-axle connection (with wheel bearing grease)

But halfway thru the ride on saturday the creaking noise returned

It seems to be coming from the headset cos everytime I take my hands (weight) off the handlebars, the noise stops

So... Now any suggestions?

My creaky expereinces:

Round 1: Felt a click in the one leg at a random point in the stroke. Turned out it was my pedals. Serviced them with grease. (R40 from hardware store)

Round 2: Heard creaking at each downward stroke on both legs. Turned out it was my seat.

Round 3: Heard creaking again. Turned out it was my seat again - they tend to shift.

Round 4: This morning I heard creaking once again. Turned out it was my new saddle I fitted this morning. Was too lazy this morning to fit the seatpost clamps properly. Will do so in the morning.

if its heaset then 1 question, is it a sealed or ball bearing,

if its a sealed bearing, take it out, clean OUTSIDE only with a cloth, run Q20(its the best but some say not) on the rubber seal then turn the bearings onside as much as you can to get the Q20 inside, a more complicated way is to remove the dust seals, clean with parafine, dry it properly and grease and close it up,

normal ball bearing type, clean with parafine then dry it well including the cups on the bike then grease an re-assemble

It might be a loose headset. I've experienced clicking from a headset before I've noticed any major play.

Another odd source of clicking:

Ticking on every second stroke when in the 53 chainring. I figured this one out when i realised my chain has 106 links, meaning two pedal strokes = one chain revolution (the strange things one thinks of while fighting boredom on the IDT). It was caused by the quick link on my chain passing through the RD pulleys.
