Ticking/Creaking NOT on pedal stroke

Howsit guys

During my ride over the weekend bike started making a tickinh/creaking noise.

On investigation I found it to happen at a particular part of my pedal revolutuon

If I get off the bike and turn the crank, there is no noise

Now I don't really tinker with the components on my bike, but was told that I should have the crank "regreased"

Person told me that the bolts in the crank need to be loosened and regreased

Is that correct or could it be some other issue?

Thanks Grayskull2009-11-15 12:51:23

Also had the same irritation quite recently. New BB and everything done by the book, but the noise persisted. It turned out to be the pedals. On close inspection I found a tiny amount of play on the left pedal. Anyway, did a replacement and all is well again.

I had same problem on 2 of my bikes. The one turned out to be the headset (this is after I paid R400 for a new BB as recomended by a shop) and the other turned out to be a loose saddle.

I had the same problem, where the creak happened at exactly the same point during each revolution. It turned out to be my cleats that were a bit worn.

Every now and again I would spray the contact area of the pedal with Q20 and then it would be fine for a week or 2 againBig%20smile

ride it until it break, then fix it.

my bike almost always has some or other creak. If you pay attention to it, it will drive you mad.

pedal until you see stars and you will soon forget about your pedal creaking...

ok, I like the two proponents. Ride it till it breaks.

Check the pedals, cause mine does it do and I can get a nice creak rythm going.

Oh yes, whats the difference between a creak and a squeak ?

Lol!!!! Some nice and varying advice!

Will start with lubing my cleats and pedals with Q20

Then will check my saddle if it still persists

And ill take it to have it checked at a bike shop

Ps. When you guys refer to the pedal axle, is that the same as the BB?

Ps. When you guys refer to the pedal axle, is that the same as the BB? The pedal axle is the actual axle in the pedal...the one you screw into the crankarm. Take the pedals off and turn the axle with your fingers and feel if the bearings feel rough. The bearings could maybe just need a bit of grease.[/quote']

Any particular grease type preferred?

If not please suggest something that is readily available

Thanks

What pedals do you have - I reckon they are the culprit.

You need to open the pedals and grease the axle - please do not use q20!!!

Your entire pedal will squeek if you have q20 between the cleat and body.

Your pedal should be clean and dry - no lube other than a tiny bit on the spring, but wipe off excess.

I have a similar problem, a highly intermittent creaking that appears mostly on uphills, at random points in the revolution. As has been suggested, I'm just pedaling till somethin breaks ;)

sounds like your saddle...or seatpost as you put more pressure to the pedals and your body rocks...wouldnt be in time as with a crank or pedal noise.

Check if the noise persists while standing... if not- then saddle area.

If it does then it's something else, check crank bolts, loose spoke in wheels. Dry headset...
