Want to install SRAM Twister Shifters - got XT

Morning all,

I got a Cannondale Scalpel 2004 - its got Shimano XT Groupset but I dont like that gear arrangement. I got SRAM Twisters on my other general purpose mtb and enjoy using them so thats what I want to fit on my 'racer' but need some advice please.

Found these SRAM X.0 Twister Shifter 9sp on CRC:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9107

Looking at a SRAM X.9 Rear Derailleur 9sp as well -

front mech? SRAM X.9 Front Derailleur Top Swing 9sp ? What's with the 'top swing'??

Cranks, BB, sprokets I will leave as is.

Problem is the brakes. The ?XT has integrated brakes so now I have to replace them. ?I really like Hope products but CRC never seems to have stock.?

Otherwise what brakes should I be looking at? Avid Juicy3? 5, 6 7? Should I replace disks/rotors as well?

Thanks in advance.

Matchstix might still have brand new X-7's for R450 which is great, and you don't have to replace your front derrailleur, as the shimano FD will work with the SRAM shifters.

For the X-0's check with CWC or even sportsdirect.co.za - very very cheap.

Rotors will be compatible accross all disk brakes, so no prob there.

The Avid's are very nice, but I prefer XT / XTR / Formula brakes - personal pref only, nothing wrong with the Juicy 5+

check on crc if you can get just the XT brake levers and no callipers, i think they are in the brake spares section,

else just look at the juicy 5 or 7,

dont worry about the rotors but a new set of brakes should come with new rotors,

all you need to change shifting wise is shifters plus rear derailer,

the xt front derailer is perfect,

Thanks guys - few more: would I be able to move those XT Shifters / Brake Levers2nd hand without the brake calipers? ?And what would I get for that complete setup??

Would the Juicy 7 brake set actually be an upgrade? The got an adjustment knob on the lever that lo0ks handy. ?

You can sell the dcl's (dual control levers) but they are not in high demand so unfortunatley don't expect much..

the Juicy's in my opinion aren't an upgrade, that little Knob is gimmickey cuz once you've set them up you don't have to play with them again...

Stick with the Shimano brakes, they use mineral oil(not car brake fluid), pads are cheaper, spares more freely available, easier to set-up, much less drama than "fruit juice".

Well, after 3 years of racing I have found the Formula Oro brakes very reliable and all smiles. They have a various models, I have used the K18, and the lighter K24 models for XC/marathon racing. No issues, brake well, you can get 1 finger or 2 finger levers, and they have a symmetrical flip-flop design where you can change which hand controls which brake by simply turning the brake lever over. also work with Sram shifter adaptors which allows you to cut out some grams by sharing the shifter barclamp.

CRC does have these brakes, and spares, I bought a set on Ebay recently for my single speed - cheaper.

very happy with them.

I also use the Sram XO twist shifters, they work great.

as for the sram front deraileur, CRC has a top pull and bottom pull option depending on the cable routing on your bike.

There seems to be two verions of the front deraileur, one lighter than the other that cater for different chainring sizes.

rotors - size matters, usually the rotors can be used with different brake types, so your shimano rotors will be fine for whatever you choose.

Mineral oil - Dot4 = all just fluid in the system. You dont need to get bleed kits, your LBS can sort out brake bleeding etc for a small fee, less hassle for you. The formula bleeding system is very simple, just make sure you have a torque wrench, because the screw tightening weights are small and specific.
