Had the same with my bike 500m into the mud and had to turn back because of the mud, also had specialize the Captain on as well. Had exactly the same at the Illovo Eston this year, on rout for the first 20km had to carry the bike and keep cleaning it.

Mud tyres not only have the bigger and wider spaced knobs but are narrower. You wont believe the difference these tyres make until you have ridden hectic mud in them.

a coupla observations:

v-brakes are a no-no. it's the first place the mud collects on a fork.

a full-susser bike without a brace between the seat stays will fare slightly better that one with.

Any 1.95 tyre will be good , do not change gears when it is muddy like that and Old Summit got it spot on with the puddles . Let other people think you are trying to show off going through them , they are walking , you are not !!!

@Summit, why's your mud red colour and cat-i 's grey??

looks more than clay than mud...

Lastly, come to the Cape  - none of that sort of serious mud!!

the clay in the vlei (hey' date=' that rhymes!) was grey (oh, so does that?Big%20smile), while the mud in the wooded sections and elsewhere was that redder stuff.[/quote']

you're a poet and we know-it

yeah, got nothing against v-brakes - still run a set on my ss - but in those conditions, that's where the build-up started. new mud would pack against the stuff ont he brakes then form an "arc" under the brace on the fork! no good!

Sure way to scratch your rim and destroy the V pads, mud i dont mind you can wash it off but when it clay it really sticks and you have to scrape it off.
