The greatest Cyclist Alan van Heerden

The best cyclist that I have ever seen in South Africa, Alan van Heerden past away this afternoon. Johny Koen and myself called him earlier today to wish him the best of luck after his operation , but unfortuanatly he was not available and we left a message on his mobile. Never did we know that he would never get this message.

I were very fortunate to ride against him, to stay with him for a few months during 1975 and still being in contact with the "Idol" as most of us called him.

He was always clean on himself , clean on his bike . Lets not say anything bad against the greatest cyclist that South Africa has ever produced.

All I can say. I solute a great friend and a great cyclist. Alan , rest in peace. from your good friend. Chris Willemse

Yes indeed. I reckon the best SA ever had. The one and only "Idol". RIP and our prayers to family and friends.

What a shock.

Saw him in the interview on S/S about 2 weeks ago and though about him and ertjies in the Rapport tour.

Can still remember the day when they finish in Jansenville. Ou school closes for that day and I was only waiting for him and Ertjies to finish that stage. I think it was 1974 or 1975. I still remember that I tried to get as close as possible to them, just to look and live the moment.

One of my all time idols (..the other one Ertjies)

RIP Alan. popeye2009-12-16 02:49:20

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.'

I bought from Alan the bike on which he won the World Vets Championship in 1995.  It's a Colnago C40, size 60cm frame, in MAPEI team colours.  I still have it.

My Darling Al, we got you through 11 tough days and you never once complained, you were just so appreciative to everyone around you caring for you and constanly thanking Doctors and Nurses and raving about the Linksfield Clinic-everytime you walked past the reception you would go and say thankyou. Just an indication of the wonderful, humble and beautiful man that you were.

Thankyou for allowing me to get to know the real Alan and giving me the priveledge to Love and Care for you over the last few months.

You are and always will be My Idol, My Darling, My World.

RIP
