Man frog I dont get it then .. why is a centre lock more advatangeous that a 6 bolt ?

6 bolts that fasten the disc to the hub, that means 6 bolts that can go wrong / seize / strip (just takes 1 to ruin your day if changing a disc).

Also each bolt needs to be tightened reasonably equaly the same torque otherwise you could "untrue" the disc, especialy if you not familar with tightening bolts correctly.

More importantly, more work involved in removing and installing 6 bolts compared to just the centre lockring.

I'm sure someone else will point out the disadvantages of the centre lock...

And how many times do you do this? Many people will never do it at home because they do not own a torx wrench (not a torque wrench)

I think why centrelock will never go mainstream is beacause it is patented 6 bolt is not.

Thanks Swiss. As man frog said - if the advantages are about installation, I have never taken a disc off, and I doubt I will if I dont have a torx wrench.

how are you warping discs during attachment? Why doesn't my motard have some sort of centre lock thingy then if it's so much better?

You asking me Mr V Brake? Never had disks yet so have not had the pleasure of changing a disk.

I would definetly do it myself and I already have a lockring tool but dont have a tqe wrench yet (my right wrist is calibrated by the QBE school of mechaniacs)

BUT granted hopefully wont be changing disks as much as v brake pads.

This is the disad of centre lock, mostly exclusive to shimano disks all though you can get adaptors for just about every other disk to work with centre lock.

I never used to like the idea of centre lock but i must say they do make sense, I'm keen on some shimano hubs that are centre lock and the more I think about it the better it sounds.....

ummm a major mini hijack ....what are the adv of going to 180 mm rotor's over 160 ?

On what terrain? For XC you do not need anything bigger then 160. I even have a 140mm on the rear wheel.

Better stopping power.

why do you need "better" stopping power? If you're standing still not prove that your brakes are good enough?

One of these:

Ah so! (said with eyes slit) i knew that and was just saying retard cause it rhymes

Maybe motobikes need 6 or more bolt mounting systems cause they are probably stronger than a centre lock system. The forces generated could probably strip the splines if used on a motobike, just a guess?

"better" stopping power = quicker to point where you are standing still.

I found that I can use one finger on the lever with little effort in most cases to be able to break. When I had a 160mm up front I had to use multiple fingers and really break "hard" to be able to stop.

just something I dont get ...... how does a 180mm have more stopping power than a 160 mm ? More surface area ? Cause that does not make sense. You dont get 180mm brake pads, so the surface area of the brake pad is still the same ...... and I am sure the "width" of the brake area on the 160 and the 180 are the same .....
