First female round SA solo finishes tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

One of the Hub's members - Jolandie - who has been riding round the circumference of SA for the past few months on her own is due to finish tomorrow at 12 midday. This is the first time that this has been done by a woman.  I think we should all congratulate her on this incredible achievement. It's also nice to know that she's one of us - a hubber.

You can pick up her website on www.jolandie.co.za

Well done Jolandie.

My sister-in-law from Pofadder had a chat with Jolandie while she stayed at her guest house. She was telling me what a great person Jolandie is.

Respect, but the Africa trip is a bit dodge and especially now. Sudan, Somalia , Libia , Algeria, Mauritania (If the Dakar guys are not willing to face this at 150km/h imagine a girl alone on her bike at 18km/h!) , then I don't even want to mention the countries around the Gulf Of Guinea (western Africa).

With terrorism and unrest in most of North africa - i think its just not good timing to do something like this. I would love to do this myself - even driving/riding up to Cairo , but as mentioned.... dodge.

Like the Afrikaans saying goes : " Moenie onder die Hoenderstelasie slaap en dan dink die hoenders gaan nie op jou k*k nie"

just my 2c

Hi Holy Roller, yes I was there as a representative of the Hub.

I picked up her bike to feel the weight of the pack on the back. It was HEAVY. When I think that at times she was doing just under 100ks per day through hilly places like Barbeton and Tzaneen with that on the back I am amazed. Really. Her next task is to go around Africa for two years.

Astana, I had the same misgivings as you however she is wanting to do the Africa trip with a backup crew. Maybe you can volenteer:-) In fact she was thinking about two backup crews - so many months on and then so many months off. However that is still in the planning stages. Never heard that expression. Lovely.LOL

Am I the only one that thinks it is a bit silly (read dangerous) for a woman to cycle on her own through South Africa, and then Africa (I assume it is with no back-up??)

But nonetheless it is impressive.

No I'm not against the idea - like I said I want to do something like this in my life either cycle or do on a motorbike.

The problem is - even if you have a bus full of crew and 3-4 back up vehicles its still dodge. you only need 4 guys with Ak47 to ask you nicely to stop and get out. And bam - the whole group has to work together. Ask me - Been in a 6 car hijack new the Mozambique border...

Net thing you see is a video camera and guys in masks with BIGGG knives filming you and demanding money from our government.

Not so sure if they will pay up...

just saying - there is something like good timing and then there is something like bad timing , and this/now is not a good time.
