Why do the pro's not race with hydration systems?

Just something else to think about... I own 2x camelback's and oly ride with water bottles now. The big prob with a camelback is you've got no idea how much water you've got left. I've done hundred's of races and never ran out of water using bottle's .. exactly why there's water points.

Oh not to add to the fact that you'll be carrying a little disadvantaged child on your back....

So my advice would be .. stick with bottles .. just buy yourself proper bottle cages.... nothing holds on to your bottles like the specialized cages ..

Rinse the Camelbak out' date=' including the hose and the mouthpiece. Then inflated slightly and store it in the deep freeze to kill any bacteria that might try and grow in it.[/quote']

Good suggestion - I got some of those 'practice' golf balls - the plastic ones with holes in - and I put them inside the 'bladder' to make sure air 'circulates' and that it dries out effectively.

I ride with 3L of water and I know when I'm on empty. I feel lighter and doing the reverse blow to keep water out of the pipe gets easier.

LOL

But CBs are great shells for ones back. Many hubber has a CB story that saved his life. Also helped me in two rather awesome wip outs.

it's not about knowing when it's finished ... it's more about measuring your intake to ensure you take in enough water.... overhydration is also a probem if you don't know how much you've been drinking.

But I guess in the end it's personal preference

I guess weight is the primary factor but also a water bottle is easier to drink from than a camelback when you are racing at high effort.

Water bottle you can squeeze and benifet from gravity to get fluid out, whereas a camelback requires some sucking which is hard if you struggling to breathe.

Makes sense Swiss !!!

Camelbak does however now make a flow meter gauge you can connect to the tube so you know how much you are drinking.

Also I saw First ascent is making a new top with grippers for the hydration pack on the back and 2 side pockets you can use when the pack is on, it's in red at sportsmans warehouse, about R350

What is the point off dieting

Yeah, what is the point? LOL  Hydration pack works for me, extra kgs included.  If you are there to enjoy and beat yourself only (like me), then hydration pack is great. It's only a small % of riders that go for the podium, the rest of us just GO FOR GOLD everytime Embarrassed

I use Hydration Pack for Water and bottle for energy drink. 2 - 3lt of energy drinks is a bit to much.

At the 2009 Sabie, a lot of us topped our packs up at the 2nd water point as it was hot and used it a lot.

Since this topic was started with a question - i would like to ask one..... if i may....

Do guys in south africa wear overshoes?

Yes I have seen a guy at a club ride this weekend wearing them , but judging by the amount of muscle and veins on his legs I take it he takes his cycling serious.LOL
