Cradle Meeting: Agenda of Solutions

I agree with a lot said here but mainly I agree with this whole idea of "rights" and ME, ME, ME. "I have somewhere to go and it's more important than you and what you're doing." What is it with the modern mentality?

 

Are we really that stoopid? Both motorists and cyclists alike. You can add the pedetrians and runnersinto this as well (generally speaking of course.)

 

Not one of us can claim exclusive use and ownership of the road. I recently read a daft article in the FHM about runners and how they should pay licence fees to use the road to run on. Problem is, we already do. Most runners are motorists and many cyclists are motorists too.

 

So I do pay license fees.

 

When it comes to road safety, we each are responsible for our own saety. This means being aware of where we are on the road at all times and being aware of other road users. Either pedestrians, runners, cyclists, motor cyclists motorists, taxi, truck or bus drivers.

 

It is time for us all to learn to accomodate one another and to begin to show mutual respect and understanding. Tolerance and forebearance will also go a long way to alleviating the current road problems.

 

What is so difficult with this? Is it really that difficult?

 

As a motorist and cyclist, I am acutely aware of other cyclists and otor cyclists on the road and try as far as possible to give them as much room as possible.

 

This is a two way street though and I'm very much afraid that some cyclists also have the wrong attitude.

 

Until attitudes are adjusted, nothing will be resolved. This applies to all road users.

 

Just one thing I would like to know:

 

Often I get overtaken by someone who could have maybe waited 10 or 15 seconds for a safer time to do this, instead of putting his / her own life and the lives of itheres at risk.

 

One day I would like to know what that person did with those very imprtant seconds.

 

More likely to be seconds from disaster one day if you aks me. And why do I have to be sucked into that sort of stupidity?

 

I could care less of you drive like a hooglian. Please, be so kind as to go and do it somewhere I am not.

Great post Slave!

I think we should all try and apply this solution no matter what we are on the road. It is certainly the cheapest and easiest option.

creating a happy relationship between cyclists and cradle residents then you

are

 

welcome to attend the next meeting.

At the end of last year a process started in getting the cycling issue

sorted

 

out once and for all.

 

 

A meeting was then held on 20 January at Kloofzicht with the following

 

attending:

 

 

* Cycle lab

 

 

*CGC (Central Gauteng Cycling)

 

 

*Hilltribe cycling

 

 

*Ian Jones

 

 

*Brookwood trout farm

 

 

*Metro police

 

 

*Conserve security

 

 

*Mark Thijs (Cyclist)

 

 

*Garth Mes (resident)

 

 

*Think Bike could not attend, but sent an email with suggestions

 

 

 

 

 

The meeting went as well as it could be expected under the circumstances

with

 

the following points been raised.

 

 

*The lawyers letter to be withdrawn.

 

 

*The parties in the incident to resolve the issue between themselves.

 

 

*No postings on the hub - issues to be internally resolved

 

 

*Metro to right a letter to relevant authorities requesting a meeting

regarding

 

cycle lanes and road surface

 

 

*Road surface issue will not be resolved in at least a year

 

 

*CGC has about 8 000 members and about 400 000 bicycles were purchased last

year

 

 

*First prize in resolving the situation would be that cyclists police

themselves

 

 

*Casual riders are a problem, as the message about safety and cycling

etiquette

 

does not reach them.

 

 

*Boards to be made requesting cyclists to ride single file on certain roads.

*Roads that are unsafe for cyclists to ride will be discussed.

 

 

*Metro to right a letter to relevant authorities requesting clarification on

 

 

cycling legislation.

 

 

*Clubs using the area as a training route will be required to meet certain

*Think bike and CGC to discuss proposal of where think bike can help spread

Thanx for posting this. Not all cyclists are members of cyclelab. Was this ever posted on the Hub...... where a large group of cyclists is represented and does have a interest in what was resolved??????

To some extent I don't agree with not posting anything on the Hub, in fact it would a be a good avenue to at least make the minutes available.

 

What possibly does need to happen is that the topic is moderated properly and posts that are outright attacks are deleted, if people can't discuss the issue like grownups.

I agree Danger Dassie. It is a bit like speaking into a PA system that is unplugged. If you want people to get the message, especially cyclists, then posting on the Hub would be a good way to communicate the message. Similar to sending 1 email to everyone as opposed to phoning and telling each person seperately. At least on the Hub you are accesible to more of the interested parties and your audience.

I think it should be made public so everybody knows what's going on.

 

 

 

One thing in the above mentioned notes that I do not agree with is the "*Boards to be made requesting cyclists to ride single file [b}on certain roads."

 

 

 

I do not think there are any dual carriage ways anywhere in the cradle so the board should be "single file at all time".

Excuse me for stating the obvious but last time i rode the cradle route there were road works being done to widen the roads. More road = More space for everyone. Problem solved.
