Anyone run the Ayup (Australian) lighting systems and have constructive feedback as to the spec and general quality of their products?

Main considerations would be:

Overall weight, quality of light beams, battery life, charge time, durability and ease of use. For Freedom Challenge type conditions.

Any info would be appreciated.

A friend was out from Australia recently and he showed his Ayup light to me. The weight is really impressive. It is also very small in size yet gives out an extremely bright light. Battery life wasn't as good as some I've heard of e.g. http://www.brighter-lights.com/index.htm lasts much longer. My friend uses his light for mx races.

Ayup not bad but very simple system when the LED's are connected direct to the battery with only a resistor between them.

There are much better systems out there like NightLightning's iBlaast II, QuadBlaast and miniblaast,

I use a pair and it is really light less than 100 grams for the lites.

The Lumens these lites pump out is enough for any ride and you get 2 sets meaning 4 lites, 2 for the bike and 2 for the helmet. Do not agree with Dibles re Battery life, used them on Desert dash and they lasted. I once tested mine and they lasted 9 hours and then started to loose brightness not just go dead like some of the stuff like Knog, Blackburn etc. Also u get enough batteries with it, think about 6. Also comes with all the mounts, chargers, cigarette liter charger, neoprene pouch etc. Only Ouch is the price.

they dim as the battery dies because they only have a resistor between the battery and the LEDS.

Other systems use a pulse width modulation circuit to switch the leds on and off about 40 times per second. this prolongs battery life and the LEDs can be driven harder and therefore brighter light output.

The unit my friend has consists of only one set of lights. If I remember correctly the Brighter Lights system lasts at least 18 hours so compared to Ay Up it has superior battery life.

18 hrs.... thats not at max brightness.

many systems have a dimming function which reduces current draw and extends battery life.

NightLightning

Exposure

Lupine

Light and Motion

etc, etc

Ay-up have two different battery packs, a 3hr and a 6hr. Their older models did not have any dimming function so you got a straight full 3 or 6 hr beam.

From what I've read, they pump out around 300 lumens per unit.

That isn't on max brightness. I'm sure Brighter-Lights will be able to help out with the exact specs.

See photos here for examples of the brightness with burn times for this specific model that he makes : https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=64148&PN=2

I know its not on max brightness because then the run time drops to around 4hrs.

Like I said, there are many dimmable lights out there.

Nightlightning can run their for 90hrs on min setting which is still brighter than a petzl!

Minimum of 6hrs at max brightness according to the link I posted.

Million dollar question then is which light system is the best on the market - taking weight, beam, duration and ease of use into account?

the one that meets all your criteria. I'm not gonna buy a 6hr 900 lumens light if I only ride for 2 hrs in a park.

Would you buy a 900 lumens light for a race like the Trans Baviaans?
