I have just built up a new bike for someone, and put a Shimano 105 groupset on a Giant OCR0 (model 2006) frame.

The problem is, that at lowest adjustment, the brake pads only just reaches the rims, and therefor catches the tire a bit. It is worse on the back wheel than front.

Have any of you experienced this. I believe Tektro brakes have longer "arms". Does anyone have to offer, or any advice?

Thanks!

You have a problem. The solution lies in "long reach" brake callipers. Shimano used to have long reach in their RX range but you will only find these at places like Harriscylery.com.

The reach is measured in a range of 10mm. Short reach (which is today's standard) is 39-49mm (I think) and long reach is 49-59mm (I think). Nevertheless, you need a longer reach. Ask your bike shop to check if the Cane Creek agents bring the longer reach brakes in.

I'm not saying Cane Creek is your only choice but it is the only supplier tht I know of. Tekro may well do it too. You can forget about it in the weight-conscious brands.

Incidentally, longer reach callipers require dedicated frames of course, but this allows you to fit up to 32mm tyres and mudguards. Quite nifty for Gauteng monsoon conditions.

Try Campag brakes. I find they have a longer reach than Shimano.

I got a pair of Centaur brakes to work on a "long reach" bike. Shimano ones wouldn't work.

You're right: Tektro makes a pair of long reach brakes, but they are not very good.

Hey dee_biker' date=' those brakes that came with the OCR0 I sold you were long reach calipers. Did you not use those? [/quote']

Obviously not...

try playing with the centering screw ontop of the caliper, I've found that playing with that adjustment can give you the millimetre or two you need...

I've had a Giant OCR with the opposite problem, the tyre rubbed on the underside of the caliper with a set of Mavic Cosmics on...

No, I sold it with my other frame before I knew that these were going to be a problem. :)
