They call it the ‘Sourtoe’ shot, a play on words because in the Gold Rush days the really hardcore dudes were called ‘Sourdoughs,’ a nickname most likely bestowed because they carried little bags of bread yeast around their necks. A couple weeks before we showed up in Dawson some guy took the shot and swallowed the entire toe, it made national news.
