Then there's Darren Lill (specialist climber) and Jay Thompson are now on the Fly V Australia team. Then there's the guy on Lance's team. There's also Christoph Van Heerden and some other SAs on MTN. I met Jay and Christoph in Chicago at a Crit where Christoph won. It was great to see some local SAs in my new home town.

Hi Anton

I know of guy's that ride for the pure chance they are getting to compete against the "pro" teams, so if you are talking about starting a team for 16-20 year olds they should do it for "free" if they are serious about things. Pay their kit (two sets) maybe shoes if you feel generous as well as helmets and glasses. The exposure they get from riding in a semi pro team should be enough for those youngsters. You should also included all entry fees and travel cost/ accomodation if needed.

If you want more info PM me and I will give you contact number and name of a guy that has a semi pro team in SA and been fairly successfull!

I am absolutely shocked!!!!

How can the Pro's earn 15-35k a month. I thought they would get atleast 80k. Is that gross or Nett? Either way, that is peanuts. They must really love cycling...alot. My hat goes off to you pro's. All those hours of blood sweat and tears for thar salary. Atleast you are living your dream Clap

I suspect that R32k per month is just the basic salary? I presume they also get more money from sponsorships and endorsements. Also add to that a free (I think?) rather valuable bike, paid race entries, supplements etc. and it starts to add up.

I'd also be interested to know how much time they actually have to commit to their jobs for both training and sponsor commitments:

While working as a full-time engineer, I managed to get in around 12hrs/week on my bike (training and races). If a pro races and trains for, say, 20hrs/week they are, in effect, only working for 8hrs above the 12hrs of 'recreational riding'. This leaves them with around 32hrs/week for sponsor commitments or other work.

Depending on what they do with that time, that could lead to significant extra income.

@Exclusive, Jeez I would give my left nut to get paid R15k a month to ride my bike! Its the transitional stage thats a big problem, getting the training done and working, enough training to get noticed by the pro teamswhile still trying to pay the rent...

I've tried to go down that road, raced "semi pro" (read for free) and I had it in the legs but not being able to pay the bills got to me...
