What now after all the black armbands were worn???

Recommended Posts

I was personally disappointed by the number of cyclists that did not wear a black armbands. I stood at the start with about 10 rolls of black insulation tape and offered it to cyclists. Most cyclists asked what it was about so they were unaware about the tragic deaths in Oudsthoorn.

Sign-Up distributed 5000 leaflets at the expo (not nearly enough, but everything costs money. Thanks to JeremyD for sponsoring these).

BigH, I applaud your efforts, but it seems that no matter what you or I try to do cyclists will not support us. It can't be a lack of funds judging by the amount of carbon and fancy equipment at the Argus. It is sad and I can only hope that cyclists will start by doing the right thing.

However, Sign-Up Cyclists Safety Initiative will carry on regardless and will do it's utmost to save lives!!

Did anyone see the banner written on the road (TDF style) somewhere near Camp's Bay? Something along the lines of "Where are our bike lanes - Cycle Safely".

After all wasn't the Argus supposed to be about bike lanes in the first place?

I think what you are doing is great Shaun, like I said earlier I'm willing to do whatever I can to avoid getting mowed down by cars and I will support you however I can. Just let us know what we can do.

Continue wearing them! Wear them for your group / individual rides.

The only way the message will get across is

1) if people can see them visually

2) the word gets around the cycle and general community.

Surely quite a few will notice the fact that you wear a black armband and will enquire as to what it is for - just like a few guys would have asked you at the Argus? The word will spread by either visually seeing the armband and hearing about the initiative. Those are the two fundamental marketing tools and you have the power to spread the word.

Joining the Sign-Up Cyclists Safety initiative will also do the part.

@ shaunh - is there somewhere in KZN that i could be able to get my hands on a Sign-Up sticker? And when our brand is launched - i will gladly distribute for you in the KZN region.

In the end - It all starts with you.

ClapShaun, give us the information as to what, where, how we can sign up and spread the drive. I think cleaning up our act is a start. We just have to find a way to reach the masses that only cycle for fun and the big races.

Are the hardcore Hubbers still on the road on their way back from ARGUS?????? Why do we not see some of them commenting on the issue of a "Code of Conduct" Could it be it is not important to most of them??????

Thanx to all so far for some positive commitment and comments.

.. sorri Scotty and Velouria .... you are hardcore..... (and others who feel they are hardcore!!!!)

The hardcore hubbers are probably all at "meetings", resting!

Big H I fully support your idea of a Code of Conduct. Sign It, Wear It, Ride It, Spread It.

The challenge will be to reach the masses (only a small percentage of cyclists have even heard of the hub (which is a pity), so the message needs to go out on broader platforms. 702 and Cape Talk spring to mind.

Where do we get the stickers in Cape Town Shaun?

I can post to you from Jo'burg. I placed a notice on the Hub about meeting in Blouberg but nobody responded.

When I was a sponsored rider, the biggest part of the contract was the bit about conduct and etiquette while out on the roads.

I am now older and slower, and although I am no longer sponsored, I still stick to those rules.

My GF dropped me off in Roeland street, about 3 blocks from the start. We were early so I stayed with her for about 30 minutes. In those 30 minutes I might have seen 10 cyclists stop at the red traffic light where we were waiting. In that time probably 1000 cyclist past us, heading towards the start of which HALF ignored the red traffic light and the other half just so happened to get it green.

The point I want to make is that we(people who want to obey the law and have others do the same) are the minority.

The bulk of cyclist in SA doesn't give 2 cents about road laws or safety.

How do you instil a sense of responsibility into a culture of disregard?
