Attempted Bike-Jacking: Old Malmesbury Rd D/Ville

On Saturday late morning after the rain, I decided to take out my Mtb for a 4 hour trip on the road. On my way riding towards the N7, on the Old Malmesbury Road (van  Schoorsdrift), just before the Moto Cross track a guy (african dude wearing dark green jacket) comes running out from behind the trees and tries to push me off my bike... Luckily he grabbed my arm but could pull me off. So much for training on quiet roads to avoid the cars...

The palooka was alone - pretty brave if you asked me. Felt like heading back there after I got home with a mate or two, with a shambock and teaching him a little lesson... anways.

Be aware and careful out there guys... We all know its better to train in groups, but its not always possibe.

As of late there have been quite a few serious attacks on cyclists in this area. Particularly where the Old Malmesbury Rd meets the N7. Please avoid riding there [or anywhere on the N7] unless in a large group.

Well if you want to go on another hunt to find your stolen bike, then by all means.

I can help you by drawing a pirates treasure map for you of where you may find your bike in DuNoon.

But maybe stay away from the big X though. smiley11.gif

I think even cycling through a dodge area in a group could be dicey.

What if your attackers have knives? or worse a gun?

They will hold the whole group hostage and take everything then.

If you train on quiet roads, you get hijacked, if you train on busy roads, you get run over.  So that leaves where to cycle if you are in the tableview / durbanville area???

I used to like riding my road bike as I could just walk out the door and ride.  Now it seems as if we have to drive to a safer area to be able to ride without looking over your shoulder every 5 minutes.

Glad you are ok and still have your bike!

Thanks Ratty...

We are in a bit of a dilema here in T/View D/Ville areas... I've heard of guys getting mugged on Polkadraai towards Stellenbosch, and even on the back road towards the Kromme Rhee... not safe anywhere really. But I still wouldn't play golf Wink

MariusL,

I love that road to train on!   smiley5.gif

Especially, on my solo rides.

Happy to hear that you are not injured.

I am starting to move to "group ride" mode now.

Reducing my solo rides beeeg time.

There is greater strength in numbers!

Carry Mace - either attached with Velcro to the handlebars or crossbar, or there's one you can attach to your arm, which may be better 'cos then you protect yourself.

I suggested to the Tracker guys at the Argus Expo that they develop a battery unit that slips down the seat post. They seemed keen on the idea, so let's see if anything happens.

Good idea. I'll definately buy for my and my son's bike. These a/holes will probably trash the bikes before we trace them,  but at least we could find them and arrange a little kangaroo court with relevent punishment etc etc?
