What Crankset

I have FSA on my mtb without any problems' date=' but believe that backup in SA is a problem and that Cape Cycles are no longer the agents for it. There is also reports of the one crank arm coming loose on a number of bikes.

I know Dad's have a pair of Crank Brothers cranks on their shelves but dont know the price.

The latest "What Mountainbike" magazine has a nice comparison on mtb cranks and my choise will be between LX or XT

Thanks man!

Will definitely go and have a look at the magazine comparison - they're generally very good!

Get a KCNC from Cyce Factory in Montague Gardens. Same weight as XTR, but a lot cheaper. I'm kitting my new MTB with KCNC handlebar (120g and it's NOT carbon!), seatpost, stem and cranks. Saves me A LOT of moolah and weighs less than most carbon.

Speak to Kyle, tell him The Hub sent you (021) 552 8285

Good grief - I have a carbon fibre handlebar, and it weighs in at 165g!!

120g is absolutely ridiculous!

Thanks for the tip.

Will have a look on the Web, and see what I can find about out about them - this does look like something worth investigating...

Oh - and in case anyone is wondering, based on the comparitive review in the latest WhatMountainBike (which I think is one of the UK's biggest mags - apart maybe from "Dirt"), they rate the RaceFace Deus Ex above the XT...

Strange indeed...

Yeah, the KCNC gear is made of Scandium, light but VERY strong, yet affordable. What more do you want?

Stem:124g for the 100mm They have an even lighter one, but I opted for the Team Issue

Seatpost: 192g

Handlebar: 123g, flat 24"

Crank: 770g if I remember correct

DR - the okes are talking serious goeters here not the kind of stuff that would come on a Rally for example. Also can't seemingly be welded with your arc welder at home Disapprove!

Sounds like Scandinavian Aluminium, but it's a form of Alu. Only stronger and lighter apparently. Waiting for the KCNC agent to let me know where you can get their gear in Jo'burg. Will let you know.

Someone out there will probably know a lot more - but the bit I do know about Scandium, is that it was touted as being the next big thing in cycling....

Came out a good few years ago, were building bike frames with it.

Was supposed to be the new Titanium, in that its strength vs weight ratio was way up there, but was apparently even more pricey than Ti... Shocked

I think the cost was its final downfall - at least with regards to frame building - though I think one or two companies Stateside still make Scandium frames...

The stuff is very rare - only occurs naturally in parts of Scandinavia - Wicki says it was first used on top of Soviet ICBM warheads - so that they could be fired from a sub through the polar icecap without being damaged, before going on to blow the 'be-dinges' out of New York etc...

Hectic.

Would make for an interesting conversation point should someone ask you about your crankset.... "You know, not so long ago, this was used on a huge friggin' missile to...."
