If you like it... then pretty please pre-order / pledge towards the book we want to make... so that we can do this thoroughly and properly. We are using a site called kickstarter to fund the production... we need to get the full amount pledged by 17th of June for there to be any funding from kickstarter. The photos and videos have been well received locally and internationally and there is a positive response, just not enough commitments on the kickstarter site. We still feel strong about it though and would love to go ahead. Here is the kickstarter project. Amazing site! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bicycleportraits/bicycle-portraits-everyday-south-africans-and-thei/widget/card.jpg the official Bicycle Portraits site where you can see some of the portraits so far... and read their priceless stories. Follow the project... facebook and twitter The Book We still need to do the design and layout, but aim to do a hard cover book. Here is a quick mockup of a book... just so you can imagine it in your lounge, for sale in your bicycle shop or perhaps even in your kitchen. http://www.dayonepublications.com/Bicycle_Portraits/Kickstarter_files/book_example.jpg Our long term goal... Through publishing this book, we want to be able to assist the underprivileged cycling community through our project - be it teaching bicycle maintenance skills, providing necessities like helmets, tires, tubes, locks? It would be great to create a support structure for the people who appear in the book - this could be a trust funded by a percentage from sales of the cover price, or a charity set up in the name of the people who appear in the book etc. Ultimately we want to promote cycling as a means of independent transport to empower the underprivileged, and in fact, to encourage everyone capable to ride a bike as an alternative to driving a car, or even using public transport. We hope that this will lead to the kind of infrastructure development that is designed with all people in mind, not just cars. read more on the kickstarter page. If you are not going through to any of the links we will at least leave you with some priceless tips of safe riding from Jak Khoza http://www.dayonepublications.com/Bicycle_Portraits/Jak_Khoza_files/jak_khoza_0141.jpg Jak Khoza Whishbone str., Lynnwood, Pretoria, South Africa 2010 / 03 / 31 16:26 'I've had this bike for 10 years now. Serious. When you cycle you need to stay safe and consider four... no, five things. One, you need brakes, if you don't have brakes, just leave the bike at home - it is too dangerous. Two, you need good tyres, if you have bad tyres without grip, forget about the bike. Three, if you turn, you need to let the cars know. If you going to the right show them two fingers, it means you are going together. Number four, if you have long pants, put it inside your socks, otherwise it might end up in your chain and then you might end up under a car, you never know, you might fall this way or that way. Number five, go straight, don't dance with the cars, the road is not for dancing, just go straight. The bike is very dangerous. So remember, your bike... the brakes, the tyres, signals, your pants and go straight. Beware.' Thanks, would also love to hear your feedback and comments on how to present the project better. - Nic muesli2010-05-17 13:17:

Bicycle Portraits Posted May 7, 2010 Share I dig the concept man' date=' will pledge some money for a book next month ?[/quote'] Thanks Weight Weenie! Remember... if you pledge $50 you are basically pre-ordering a book, for most probably less that it will end up costing at a place like Exclusive books. Also, you authorise payment when you pledge but your card will only get charged by Amazon (who facilitates kickstarter payments) if there is enough pledges by the 17th of June. So if you pledge now there it no charge yet - Nic muesli2010-05-07 03:53:
Bicycle Portraits Posted May 7, 2010 Share love baba jak! great idea.... gotta add GM/burry to the mix We will see where the project leads us, at the moment we are mostly interviewing/photographing people who don't usually get photographed:) but if Burry and GM cycle to their work... I guess ha ha maybe from their home to the races then we'll have good excuse to go find them. We are focussing mostly on commuting culture so far. Something that is very very underdeveloped in SA compared to many 1st and 3rd world countries out there.
