If you, like a certain bikeshop, thought that they are the same then you'd be wrong.

See the pics for difference. The campag brake cable's lead thingy at the one end is smaller. There is also a very slight difference in the housing diameter.

If you run campag, but can only find shimano brake cable, then you can just file down the lead part to fit in the ergo levers.

All I know is that the Campy seems a lot more flexible. When I had a new bike built up last year with Chorus, it had a bit of sticky shifting. Took it for a second opinion and was shown that Campy cables had not been used. Due to the fact that they are bent under the bar tape at quite an angle, they were getting stuck, or almost kinking. Put original Campy cables on and now it shifts like butter.

I regularly fit Shimano-style brake cables to my Campy levers with no ill effect.

The gear cables are however completely different. If you force a Shimano gear cable into some Campy levers (erspecially pointy ergo) then you have problems. The cable head gets stuck in the ergo and surgery is required to remove it.

I use Shimano cable (much cheaper) on my Campy stuff but grind the head smaller and shorter. Test it in reverse and make sure it removes easily, before threading it through. Once it is threaded through and pulled tight, it sticks.

Here's where the misfit took place before grinding it down.

I would have bought campag, but the bikeshop told me there's no difference and being my first time replacing roadie cables I believed them.

Should probably give them a call to let them know

+1. I have done that before.

You are too fussy. It works and it doesn't interfere with anything.

Why bother filing it down? I've been riding like that for years.

Well the filing took 5sec. Used one of those electric grinder things. Didn't have a clue at that moment if it would affect anything

Hi there,

My local bike store fitted Shimano cable to my 11Speed Super Record Gruppo and the shifting was not to great. The cable wasn't releasing properly. I just changed all the cables to the Campy Ultra low friction cables and all is sorted. My machine is shifting better then ever.

Only use CAMPY for CAMPY.

Chow.

I think 11sp may use smaller diameter cables than 10sp.

Not sure, but all I know is that Campy parts work best with Campy. I almost gave up and sold the Gruppo to put on Sram red.
