It's not your fault if she did the 40km and knows she isn't fit enough.

Buy her some flowers and she will feel better and send her a cushion to sit on at work.

Story I heard about 20K riders all going wrong: Apparently a 20K guy had an X on his numberboard - starting in the X-group. He rode to the front and saw a Nissan sign with an X on it. He didn't understand DON'T TURN HERE, and thought he is an X- group rider so the sign must be for them. He followed it and all the rest followed blindly...

That's the story!

nope, from someone that was there... everyone rode in a group, following the road. usually the path has a natural flow to it and everyone just carried on up to the gate, there the marshall told us that we missed the split and that it is the 40km straight ahead, alot of people was already on the other side and riding the 40... so we turned around and went back to the "split" there the whole group devided into two again as no one was sure which path to take.. and of course no marshall...

some guys tried to "backtrack' riding the opposite direction of the arrows... so they might have added a whole lot more km's to the ride :)

eventually ended up back at the finish..

a point to note is... nobody gives a crap about the 20km. it is a fun race. So why should one go through all the hassle of getting n race number/board? the seeding system is also pointless as everyone is started in a bunch. I understand some of the youngsters take a real dig at it etc.. but still! if it is for them comptetitors to get a feel for it, start it then by seeding order!

i am also sure there must have been a couple of concerned parents out there waiting for kids to finish not knowing they were on the 40km?

Ja, the 20km ride was a bit of a STUFF-UP. I did the 40, ouch, but my better half did the supposed 20km. Apparently they split of onto our (40km) return leg, ie the first 2.5kms where the outbound and inbound routes merged. They were all following some-one. Rider X, I suppose, but were told they were on the wrong route and turned around after 7km. She was moerse dissapointed, and ended-up doing another 10km in Cullinan and surrounds.

Back to that 40km ride. Really nasty, and finally after 10 years or riding bad-luck got hold of me, Two flats, so that was 33km or riding, and 7km of walking.....
