Relocating from joburg to Cape Town

Moved down here end of last year. Was lucky to get promoted/transfered at Company I work for. Few things I found.

1) Rent here is a LOT more affordable than in Rtb where I came from. Area I'm renting in now is considered "upmarket", but I'm still paying A LOT LESS rent than in Rtb. Cannot compare the two at all.

2) Capies are clicky and do not make friends easily (Ok, so do I, very finicky when it comes to friendship)

Have met a lot of nice people through cycling (both Road and Mtb), but no real friends yet.

3) Lots of stuff to do in your free time. Too much to name.

4) Lot more relaxed here. Business ethic is different. CA stands for "call again", very little gets done after first phone call/contact, etc. (but I'm using that to my advantage here :D )

5)Crime levels are lower here.

I can go on and on. Like I tell my friends up north when they try and take the mickey out of me and tell me about the bad weather, my response is "A bad day in Capetown is still a 1000 times better than a good day in Gangsters Paradise."

I have had the opposite opportunities - to head up to Jhb, for a lot more $$$. But the lifestyle down here is worth more to me than $$$.

It's all about sacrifice - what are you willing to give up to live in the most beautiful city in the world?

I thought he said he was moving to cape town, not Sydney.

Well, for me I have a holiday home there and its great to visit two or three times a year, but I would never move there permanently.

Mostly, for me, I cant operate on "go slow" all day, and I like to be served in restaurants when I sit down, not when you finally catch the waiters eye, the wind drives me crazy, and the winters suck, cold, wet dark and windy, the roads are from the middle ages, narrow and seriously congested and the traffic in and out of Cape Town is 10x worse than Joeys.

.....on the plus side, a hot, windless day in Cape Town is magnificient, I think they had three last year so pick your time well.! :D

Naa, I like the frentic pace in Joeys and the people are busy and friendly.

If you think weaving baskets on the mountain is a profession, Cape town is for you. If you are looking to carve a career for yourself in an established field, Joeys is the only place to be.

Thanks for all the replies so far it is really helping me , I am in the IT field I am a programmer by the way ...

Advantage with development is that you can be anywhere. Salary various depending where you work and the closer to the City centre, the more you get paid.

I live & work in Somerset West (48km from City centre) and do not get as much as those City geeks do but it does not bother me as I hate driving and Capetonians are bad with traffic jams. Guess its in our nature not to be in a rush.

Also we got the mountains. :D

I basically moved from Stellies(student) to pta last year.

Pros:

I really love sport and there's at least one event every weekend within 100km radius from here. (road/mtb/running/adventure sports)

I you're looking for something, doesn't matter what, you'll find it here in gauteng. Sporting equipment, electronics, spesific ingredients, whatever. It's all here)

You've got events/shows at montecasino/coca cola dome/emperors/sun city.

There's a great mall around every block.

International mail centre is here, so faster crc.

Service is good.

Lot's of work available

If you're smart, you don't have to sit in traffic.

No wind.

Cons:

Have to pay for everything.

No cwc, but we've got johan bornman.

Fugly in winter.

No mountains

Dust cloud

A lot of angry stressed individuals.

Taxis

The "I am better and richer than you" crowd

Everything is expensive.

No winetasting

Not the best place to raise children if you have certain religous believes.(My opinion)

Last but not least: It's not Cape Town

My plan is to move to Cape Town when I'm 28-30.
