i speak under correction but you are allowed to cycle on a national road provided there are less than 10 riders and the group is not backed up by a following vehicle. if you are a bigger party and require a back up vehicle you would need road permission from the traffic authorities thru whose area you are riding.

Its those support cars that cause problems as well, I see there is one that comes on the R560 on a Sunday morning, people fly down this road at 100km/h (especially seeing how it is a quiet rural road) and then suddenly you have this support car doing 30km/h taking up the whole lane!

Are the road signs blue or green? Blue = no bicycles/pedestrians/50cc bikes allowed Green = bikes allowed. As far as I know that piece of road is blue...

Also, the biggest issue on our highways is not so much speed, but the speed differential, here you have cars doing 120km/h+ vs. bicycles doing say 35...

35.... That is pushing it for me.... B)

This is a very delicate situation in a way - If you want something done about it then phone the sponsers IE House of Paints and complain and I am sure Mr Edwards will get into trouble from HOP but where it gets delicate is the fact that we need all the financial support we can get especially when it comes to road cycling and this wont sit well with HOP. The last thing cycling needs is to loose another sponser.

I know the stretch of road you are talking about and cycling is deffinatly NOT allowed there.

I often see the "team leader" riding on the streets of Durban without a helmet as usual setting a good example!

Anybody can ride with a bicycle on a National Road. Nothings stops you from doing it.

What is illegal though is riding on a freeway.

Let me explain. There are basically three types of roads:-

*Normal roads with a left hand and right hand lane or lanes. These roads have T-junctions and crossroads at the same level as the road.

*Express way, a road with a median seperating the left and right hand lanes but with T-junctions and crossroads at the same level as the road as above.

* Freeways that have over or underbridges and allows traffic on the road to flow unimpeded it also has on and offramps to allow access to tyraffic. IT IS ILLEGAL TO RIDE ON ROADS LIKE THIS.

National Road has nothing to do with it. It is law, maybe a stupid law, but it is law. What is more, if you are hurt on a freeway you are busy with an illegal activity and if the insurance accessor is smart you and the third party will not receive a single cent in compensation. You as the guilty party will be liable for all damages and costs incurred....... that is if you are alive!!!!!!! If not your family will bear the brunt.

.... sooooo Buttafly, Coenie and all of the rest do you understand now???????

As long as it is not a freeway you are cool.

PPL get thier knickers in a bunch re the N! from Paarden Eiland to Cape Town. Why that is no longer a freeway there so we may ride there.

Also iin SSburbs the blue route is off limits comming into Cape Rown till almost the top of Wynberg Hill then it is open to us again.

So not letter before the road name means nothing (R300 No go actually Kuilsriver Freeway)

But that said, i still think the Freeways are way safer to cycle on than the backroads with no sholder.

I agree fully with you **** (edit D!ck ..... my goodness your name is a swearword!!!!, you should report this to Admin!!!!!)but the people who make the laws do not think so...... they say the speed differential between bucylces and cars ar the limiting factor. When you confront them with a normal road like the Rooi Els road that has no dicernable shoulder and is extremely unsafe they just shurg their shoulders.

Big H

the 1st 15 k's of the argus is on a freeway , are you telling me we are taking part in a illegal activity every year? and if we are killed we won't be able to hold the organisers liable????

Posted

No. Certain of the rules are waived if you're taking part an officially sanctioned race. Likewise it is not illegal to ride in a large bunch spanning the entire left side of the road during a normal race.
