Table Mountain Muggings

On Sunday William Simpson from the car dealership in Tokai was held at gun point and the guy made off with Williams Specialized MTB bike. Two in one week proves we have a serious problem. These guys are clearly working for a syndicate........

its shocking, i have been up the rhodes mem, table mountain route many many times and have seen dodgy fellows but ride towards them, then suddenly jumo to the other lane and sprint for my life, always catches them offguard... have seen them walking round with sticks and hanging around the blockhouse

Scary to think that saturday morning I went all the way up to the blockhouse early morning and I was out there alone.

Will think twice about doing that again.!!

ORCA, do you have more info on this? Where did you get the update from?

Hope to hell it true - I ended up doing a spin class yesterday instead of hitting the mountain. That's just wrong on a nice sunny afternoon!

Are these muggings specific to Table Mountain?  How safe is Tokai?  If I feel adventurous, I normally go up there by myself either on a Friday afternoon (after 4) or on a Saturday morning.

Tokai is very safe , I do all my MTB riding there and have never heard of any muggings (touch wood), but don't become complacent - these guys might move on from Table Mountain, you never know, so always be prepared.

A collegue told me a story about a friend of a friend who had their car broken into and tyres slashed in the parking lot, late-ish one afternoon at Tokai.

I've never had a problem there, even seen a dodgy character. And there is always security in or around the parking lot - its extremely unlikely for car breaking to occur there.

The car was parked down the road as the parking lot was full that day, but still it shouldn't happen

I think the break in was after the security guard had already left.  Two weeks ago when I went there, the guard told me that he leaves at 17h30.

Don?t have all the info as yet, police still looking for a few more suspects.

But heard this directly from the guy who was mugged on Tuesday and robbed of his mtb.

Interesting. Hope this bugger gets put away for a long time. Our experience in Obs though is that criminals like this are out on bail very soon and get rightback to what they know best.

You must be joking!

What I would love to know is how much these stolen bikes get sold for and how they are used in their new life. Any info?
