Hello My Imaginary Friends

About the bike: Scott CR1, Campag Record 10 speed rolling on Ksyrium SL's with Conti Attack/Force tyres.

About me: 40-something weekend warrior. 65kg in damp socks. PPA H seeding, with my usual summer training I expect to do an Argus of around 3:15 next year.

I have no complaints about the Ksyriums, but I wonder if there are wheels out there that might make my riding a bit zippier, if you will pardon the pun. Top whack would be R7K, and I'd consider good second hand wheels. I'd only be interested in clinchers because I do not have a support vehicle or team of dedicated seamstresses to keep me in freshly sewn tubbies.

In truth I like the K's, I like the way they look and they haven't given me a moment's bother, but they are around 6 years old and I wonder if wheels haven't moved on a bit since I've had them. I'd be speshly keen to hear from similar pace riders who have moved on from K's and found something that rocked their world.

Ta.

Hi James,

I have Ness Full Carbon aero clinchers 38mm deep front and 50mm deep rear. You can use them in any wind condition and get the aero advantage. These wheels are stiff! As of today I also have Campag versions in stock. R7500

I like the way no body answers the question :D :D :D

Bikemonster, you only need new wheels if you want new wheels.

As long as your current wheels turn nicely then they still ok.

Lighter wheels may help a little but it will all depend on the engine (you).

At least you know that the groupset is 110% :) :)

Great question, bikemonster!

I too am thinking about a cool choice for new wheels within the next while...

7K budget... Hmmm... what's out there?

Ksyrium SL's are great wheels, supper stiff any light, and just right for climbing the windy hills of the Argus. I roll on 2010 Ksyriums, and I don't know if there are much difference between mine and yours. 2010's weighs 1485g, not the lightest, but ok! My normal flat riding I do with aero deep sections, but will definitely fit the Mavics for the Argus. If you had good service from Mavic, stick with Mavic, and maybe just compare the weight between new and old, and then decide if it is worth it.

Have a browse through Totalcycling.com. For under R7k you could get a set of Campag Eurus wheels or for about R1k more a set of Shamals. For some reason the Fulcrum Racing 1s and 0s (which are essentially the same wheel, just different spoke patterns) are around R1k more than the Campags.
