I think race organizers should show more responsibility in cleaning the route after hosting a race. On Saturday morning I went out on a ride in the same area where the Nissan Hazeldean MTB race was held on 5 June and there were still tape and pointer boards lying around. I can now understand why some landowners refuse their properties to be used for races and recreational riding.

Yesterday I went on sections of the route used for the Beast of the East MTB race which took place on Saturday 2 October and found all the route markings still untouched. However in many places tape has come loose from trees and is lying all over the area.

It is a shame that race organizers don’t show the responsibility to properly clean the race route after an event. Are they perhaps too busy counting the profits they made?

Ikonic, do you have a map of the Hazeldean route that you did as I would be very interested in tackling a new route in my own backyard. Did you feal safe while doing this ride?

Dirtracker I live in the area and we ride the Boschkop area weekly. I often ride alone and I have never felt unsafe. PM me should you be interested in joining up for a ride

That's disgusting. I wonder, is it the same organiser? Maybe give Nissan corporate affairs a ring and let them know that it's their name that gets dragged throuh the mud. It could be though, that the organisers were too busy running after the gel sachets that cyclists seem totally incapable of putting back in their pockets. What's wrong with people these days?

I gotta agree with the "gel sachet" comment made by Le Turbo.

I was absolutely amazed at how many empty gel sachets were thrown down, along Karoo to Coast route.

I thought roadies were bad, and yes Im generalising, but come on guys and girls it was plain disgusting. Makes me wonder what some peoples homes look like - hahaha.

I was with Bennie this morning and he mentioned to me that they are taking a team out tomorrow to do the cleanup and remove all the taping boards etc. normal procedure after an event. What I have a problem with is riders throwing rubbish, was following a rider through a thick bushy section on Saturdays race who threw a sachet deep into the bushes - maybe thought no one would notice it there.

Have to agree - there were loads of sachets along the road through the forest. Sad, considering the area we were riding through! If you've backed off the gas to take your Gu, what a few more seconds to put the empty sachet back in your pouch etc? :(

Being used to seeing cyclists chuck their energy bar wrappers next to the road on their training rides(Boschkop/R25), hearing this doesn't surprise me in the least.

Haven't picked a fight with any of the litter bugs yet, but my patience is running thin...so the next dirty bastard better hope the 0.03g of ballast he tossed overboard will help him cycle faster than me :D

Race organizers should clean up the signs and route markers agreed.

But Riders should clean up after themselves and not litter in the first place.

Just take a long MTB route, like the 55km we did in Lourensford over the weekend, surely not one cyclist can expect the organizers to provide a crew that is going to walk the whole 55km to pick up trash  (although I did not see any trash :D )

Single track and rough terrain, some places I would not want to go hiking that is for sure!

People litter, farm owners get angry (understandability) and usage of the route get canceled.

Simple really, if you want to keep riding there or anywhere, keep it clean!

No need to pick a fight, but I have a quiet word in the ear of everybody I see chucking sachets.

Sachet chuckers need to be told that what they are doing is not acceptable. If people don't tell them, they will carry on.

Hell, if people do tell them, they may still carry on chucking sachets...but it can't hurt to try!

Just brings my blood to a boil to see some cyclists act with complete disregard for the environment and fellow road users...besides making the rest of us cyclists look like idiots :(

Ah well, now I'll have to start training during the week again so I'll have enough breath left during my wkend rides to point out to some cyclists the error of their littering ways. :D

no excuse whatsoever for tossing anything during a mtb race.I can only speak for mtb as I have not been on a road bike the last 20 odd years. This includes empty bombs, tubes etc.I always at least tell the person it is not on.

Some hubbers made a big hoo haa about the roadies tossing their sachets on the road and that they need to come and learn from the MTBkers. What went wrong Mounties? O yes this must be the roadies who converted to MTBking he?
