Shimano SPD vs Crank Brothers

Think I've got a sollution, use a SPD on the one side and a CB on the other side. Go for a good long ride and see which leg/side feels best. There, problem solved.

I won't wear my powerband while I ride and I will also ride with water instead of the 32GI so I can get the best results. I don't want to influence the results in anyway. :D

I have ridden a set of Shimano M540 pedals for 6 years already and had not one problem.

I also have a set of shimano xtr pedals which i hav'nt serviced for 2 years, they still run smoothly.

Shimano make the best pedals

I been using SPD for years and never had any problem, even with a lot of mud. Clip off is easy, just get the adjustment right. I use them on my mtb, communiting mtb and road bike.

Having said that, Crank Bros pedals certainly look Kooler although my latest XTR SPD's are not too bad.

Like I said earlier, I have ridden with the Shimano spd's for about 4 years now without any problems. There have been a few issues with mud shedding but these have been under extreme conditions. (Illovo Eston two years ago comes to mind... My bike gained about 10kg in the first 5km!) The functioning of the pedals have been fine. No maintenance except for a squirt of Q20 before each ride

CB's users have also had good life out of their pedals and the clip in and out issues are few and far between. It could be the old VW vs Opel scenario. Which is better? I suppose it depends on personal preference. I have had the opportunity to try both and first impressions are that the Shimanos feel better because of the limited amount foot movement compared to the CB's and the positive feeling when you clip in, but I think I need to use the CB's a bit more to get a better feel for them and give them a fair chance. I am fortunate to have both that I can try so lets see how it goes.

The feedback from fellow hubbers has been great and much appreciated. It is interesting to note different peoples preferences.

Looks like I am going to be riding CB's for a while longer!!! :)

Hi Weight Weenie,Where did you get yours from and what was the cost? I saw them last night on CRC for about R88 plus the R109 postage. They aren't available from CWC or Buycycle. I haven't tried my LBS yet but buying online is so much easier!

Howsat I saw them today at my LBS for R120, I'm down in Bloemfontein though

Saw some at Cyclelab in fourways today, R110.

I got mine from crc.

Maybe try the lab in durbs or contact Shamus on the hub, he is the CB agent

They also have a site you can buy online at - bicicletta.co.za I think

silly questions - I recently bought a bike that came with SPDs (M520).

Being my 1st bike - I asked them to leave the reflective cover on - so I could ride with normal sneakers so I could get used to the bike...

Was I supposed to get a set of shimano cleats with those pedals?

I suppose it depends on the bike shop. But I would have thought they would have given you the cleats as well. The Pedals come packaged with the cleats so go back and ask them.

The bike that I bought came with the CB Smarty's and they gave me a bag with the plastic inserts as well as the cleats for my shoes. Go back to the bike shop and ask them for the cleats. If you have to buy cleats, I would recommend buying the Shimano ones. I have heard stories about the aftermarket ones giving hassles and for the sake of a few rand it sounds like it is worth it to get the Shimano cleats.

I had spd's for 3 years. I swore by them, but mud was a problem

I changed to eggbeaters for two years and swore by them. They were miles ahead of the spd's i had used but the engagement gave me some problems. it was definitely more difficult to clip in than the spd's. I dont know how to explain it. especially so when a i was a bit tired and it was muddy at the end of a race. But i was happy with them and stuck with them for 2 years.

I then got some XTR spds two years ago and can confidently say that these are the best pedals i have used to date.

They clip in and out super easy. even when tired and muddy.

the mud clearance is exceptional.

they are bullet proof. Two years with NO maintenance. none whatsoever. and they are still turning very smoothly. the eggbeaters had constant maintenance. open up, regrease, new seals. twice in two years.

So to sum up. you get spd's, then eggbeaters and then you get xtr spds. There is a world of difference between each of them.

Having spent the same amount of time (2 years) on both eggbeaters and xtr spd's i have to give the xtr the nod as they require less maintenance in the end and are just as easy to clip out of as the eggbeaters, but slightly easier to clip into, and shed mud just as well.
