Which budget Hardtail?

Hi fellow hubbers,

For someone who has a limited budget of R6000, which of the following hardtails would you rate as the best one? ...and which one has the potential for a slight upgrade (components) in the future?

2010 Mongoose Tyax Super http://www.mongoose.com/gbr/eng/mtn/Products/Mountain-Urban/Details/2852-M10TYASU-Tyax-Super

2011 Merida TFS 100 http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/2011/191/MTB+Hardtail/MATTS+TFS+100-D

2011 Silverback Saturn http://www.silverbacklab.com/2011/saturn.jpg

2011 Specialised Hardrock http://specialized-sa.co.za/contentbike.php?range=15&year=77&bike=200

thanks

Silver back is renound for giving you decent components at a good price - hydraulic brakes etc.

Merida is much the same, I ride one myself.

Out of the 2 I would go for the silverback - better colour scheme :)

Hardrock hands down, great frame.

HardRock has V-Brakes

I'm no mtb expert, but the 'Goose looks like a nice deal, SRAM components as well

Maybe you should be looking at a higher spec Silverback. The Saturn should sell for about R4900.00 after discount which is below your budget.

Guest Travis.

Another brand that offers good components for the price is KHS. Not sure about the prices, but have a look at how they compare.

I know its nice to get new, but also have a look through at a second hand bike, you just find something better;)

Is you must decide between those - Silverback (and water off a ducks back when the laanies tell you SB is not kewl - their opinions are mostly affected by price (and this should not be of concern to you in the price class you are starting off)).

Otherwise - there are many other great deals in that range - could even go for a well spec'ed older model still in stock - might be able to talk yourself into a great bargain (with 2008/09's clour scheme, but so what!)

I think you can get this for around R7500.00, it has higher spec

check out www.obike.co.za

There's a new 2009 Canondale F5 with Rock Shock Dart 3 and (mostly) SRAM X-5 components for R6k.

Looks like a good deal.

The Goose still looks better.

Just be cautious of the shock your getting with the bike. A replacement will cost you over R1K and those OEM Suntours are crap. Talking from experience.

Re: the Mongoose Tyax Super, I have one - the spec on the site says the fork is:

Suntour Raidon RLD 120mm travel, magnesium lowers, 32mm aluminum stanchions, hydro damping and remote lock out

It is in fact (as per the pic), a 100mm travel Rock Shox Tora (coil) and does not have a remote lock out

Good luck with your decision
