What the hell!? - Sorted, thanks hub!

I'm at a loss, I don't know how to sort this out or even whats wrong. When I back pedal, my freewheel won't turn. It turns a bit and then snags and then turns a bit and snags again. Coasting is fine, turning the freewheel by hand is fine, normal pedalling is fine. Actually, riding is fine, but this bothers me.

So I figure it's either something wrong with the freewheel (which I don't know how to fix) or there's something wrong with the rear derrailleur (which shifts marvelously).

Any ideas/advice?

rear mech. check if the chain hangs up on one of the cogs. Also, in which gear does it happen? on mine, it sometimes happens i can backpedal in the two lowest gears, almost as if the rear mech does not have sufficient tension, so the chain slacks up and just wraps around either the cassette or one of the rear mech's pulleys.

I have no idea if this helps, but I found it on bikexchange.com ....

"If you do in fact have a freewheel as opposed to the modern cassette (people often say freewheel when they mean cassette), it is often possible to flush out contaminants without taking the body apart, which I would not recommend.

You can use a solvent/lubricant type stuff like "Blaster" (smells bad) or "Knock 'er Loose" (sounds rather sexist). Use the nozzle to blast the stuff into the crack between the outer body and the outer race (small cog side) and use plenty. Spin the outside of the freewheel as you do this. After it starts to free up a bit, shake out all the solvent that you can and let it drain for several hours. Then, lubricate again with a medium weight oil, like gear oil or light weight motor oil by dripping this into the same crack. If this doesn't work, it's probably not worth any further trouble. Buy a new freewheel and lube it with the medium oil before use and frequently (3-4 times a year ) thereafter to prevent said seizures."

It just happenned suddenly one day?

It happenned to me once, the bike shop had changed the free wheel body and "overtightened" the cones that keep the whole assembly together.

For your problem, it looks like your free wheel body or the bearings are dead and offers some resistance, that's why you only notice it pedalling backwards.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will try all the above mentioned.

Capricorn, it's exactly the same as you described, did you manage to sort it out?

The cones might be too tight, recently repacked the bearings in the rear hub, but it was happening before that. Thats why I did it.

Will check it out.

Mavic wheels?

They do that. normally a bit of dirt or crease that is not right. Take it apart, clean and apply the right crease....and very LITTLE at that!

Nope, Shimano

My mate had the same problem with a brand new giant 29er, all it was was the plastic cover between the cluster and the wheel that protects the rear derailer from going in to the spokes.

I would go with Capricorn on this one. I have the same problem but only when in my smallest gear. Chain comes off the "top" pulley wheel of the derailleur when I back pedal.

I cant sort it out unfortunately and dont really understand why it just started happening. only way i can sort it out is by adjusting the derailleur but then my gears skip when i change! Rather live with the back pedal problem!

nope, i havent. However, I have changed wheelsets in the interim so perhaps they've correctly tighted up the cones this time. When I mount a new wheelset, i'll check those as I'm moving my Hope hub over to the new rims. Currently running the mavic hubs.

Glad you gave us the feedback on what solved your problem. :)
