OLD NEWS!! - From August 2010 ;)

Only the frames destined for the US. Those that came to SA was fine and not part of the recall. It was an issue with the shape of the butt that would weaken the weld. It was recalled in August and is now again fully available in the US.

It was also only on the sizes S,M and L. The XL was fine.

I've pre-ordered a Large (polished finish)

The XL bikes are not affected and have been available for some time now.

The L (In white) also now available.

The frame can crack at the junction of the seat post and top tube. I am still concerned because it looks very weak at that joint and I am not a light rider.

Should I cancel the order and get something else?

Just compare the Giant's frame with the Ellsworth Evolve and Niner Jet9. (Jet9 had to be redesigned)

All 3 bikes have similar (80 - 100mm) travel.

at least they had the balls to do it

frame manufacturers are pushing the limits of strength vs weight to the wrong side of the line... I'd rather have a frame that weighs 200gm more and not likely to break

having said that, i think the Giants are great and good value for money as well

I've got one (XL) and was also concerned about the size of that joint. I did my research and found that the ratio at which the frame cracks to be the same as the other makes (even those with the gussets). With Giant the frame was replaced on average within 3 days. Some of the other makes took up to 3 months to replace.

Already did 300km's in races and hit some of the hardest stuff - no issues.

Buy a similar bike with the same components and you will pay at least R12k more. Giant gives a lifetime warranty on the frame (1st owner only) - I suggest you keep with it. PM me if you need a good deal.

Big question to all the sceptics: You just mention the 29er. The 2011 26" Anthems got the exact same joint and this is not an issue?????

Hats off to Giant to recall the US batch that they found to be suspect. Note - not a single frame cracked. They saw an issue with how the butt was shaped for that batch and recalled it - even without someone having an issue with a crack/break.

I would be interested in seeing that verified - can you post the links to where you found this info? Which other makes is this compared to? Not trying to fight, genuinely curious. :)

An3 that happens when you either put extended seatposts in or when you extend your current seatpost beyond the recommended length. , if you dont follow that basic principle yes you will bend or crack your frame.

I have the 26" anthem X frame, I weigh 94KG and I do abuse my bike not so much as a creak and definitly one of the nicest frames money can buy. Sure there are better looking frames out there but none that i have ridden comes close to the balance precision and enjoyment of an Anthem ride.

It is good to see your positive comments.

If you read the Hub post, it sounds like everybody had their seat-posts inserted within limits.

Make no mistake - I am a huge Giant fan. Recently sold my 2009 Trance to upgrade to Anthem 29er.

I do not think any other brand can compete with Anthem 29er in terms of value.

The component mix is fantastic and it is very light. (Even with stock wheels.)

LBS weighed XL 29er. Think it was 11.2 kg. The 2010 Anthem 26" X2 with similar spec (Mostly XT) was only 200g lighter.

I will probably still go with the Anthem 29er but I just do not want to get stuck with an unreliable frame.

You will find all info on the Internet. Various sites and blogs. Almost 99% of frame cracks are due to seat post length (those people that goes past the maximum mark).

Funny that the only Anthems that had issues was the 2010 frames (the joint is bigger than those on 2011). I know plenty of people with Anthem 2010. They all swear by it.

I had a Merida 96 and I can now vouch that you only experience soft tail on the Giant. Looking back, the 96 was like a hard tail.

According to the internet, if you look for the info, the ratio in this case is far, far higher than any other manufacturer's recall rate - almost 80 percent of the frames have had to be returned and replaced.

Don't believe me? You shouldn't. I made it up just like you made up your bit about the return rate on the Anthem X1s. And the bit about the 26er bikes, which I see was nonsense too. If you had found it on the www, you would, surely, not have a problem posting some links here so the rest of us can make up our minds too?

Now, if you show me your sources then I can believe you, until then I can only presume you bought the placating story you were told by your bike shop. Or you work for Giant and are trying some clever damage control.

Good luck with that the only thing google with spew at you is about the 29'er being recalled, Before i bought my anthem i spoke to two people on about their seatpost joints cracking, both of those individuals had their seatposts above the maximum length, I cant comment on the 2011 range though. On the flip side i give an A to giant for recalling, Just do a search on the hub for scott's with cracked chainstays and you will realize there is a definite manufacturing error. Yet scott couldnt be botherd to recall.

Regardless I love my bike, and yesterday zooming down the single track i found myself telling my bike just how much i love her as i landed from a poorly judged jump and she saved my ass again.
