Mandibles.......thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of you might remember her as she was quite active here.

Yesterday after the road race my front wheel was very soft, I felt it being very unstable in the last 5 k's and slowed down to not get that eminent flat.

I managed to nurse it till the finish.

I only had a bomb and spare tube which I didn't want to use just so I could get home.

Asking around for a pump and being sneered at, even by those who had a pump on the bike ,I decided it was time for that tube change.

I then spotted this mountain biker goose, and after a nice resounding yes, I used her pump to pump my wheel so I could get home.

She then explained who she was and I felt very encouraged by her friendliness.

Some of you will say, I am lazy, could have put in a tube, or phoned someone to fetch me etc,etc.........

What was so profound to me, after asking many folks for assistance, I was then helped by a Hubber and an MTB. hubber nogal.

Thanks Mandibles.

No surprises there... was my first 94.7 yesterday, first road race too, did it with the wife on a tandem... all i can say is the roadies could learn from the mtb'ers... cycling is supposed to be fun, no need to be sour all the time!

That being said, i had a lot of fun riding past said "grouches" on the uphills

I could not agree with you more about having a bit of fun while you ride, but I disagree that mtb'rs are friendly and roadies are not.

I have greeted many a mtb'er whilst riding at N.F's, Groenkloof and Van Gaalens and they were as miserable as Juliuswink.gif Malema at an AWB braai!

HIJACK ON:I read so often about how sour road cyclists and friendly MTB'ers and I think there is probably an element of truth there. Let's face it, you have 2 guys - one laid back and the other aggressive. You would put money on it that the aggressive guy would be attracted to the pace and intensity of road cycling whereas the laid back one would prefer the more relaxed MTB vibe. (Obviously a generalisation so extinguish your flames).

But I must say that as someone who does both, when I am road cycling, I have a different mind set. I am in "speed mode" with the intention of getting to the line. I am concentrating and not interested in having a long chat with anyone - sure a few words but not a chat. And I don't want to wave to anyone because I am in a bunch and I don't want to take my hands off the bars just to appear friendly and cause a pile up.

HIJACK OFF

But well done to Mandibles for stopping to help another. If I was training I would DEFINITELY stop but on a ride like the 94.7 with a goal of doing it in a certain time, unless I felt the person was in trouble I wouldn't. You should always have the tools to fix your own puncture and if you don't - well then you suffer the consequences. This is not a dig at Dangle who did have the tools.

Scooter I dont think its a case of the one being laid back and the other being aggressive, I think on a attitude scale MTB'ers need to be more aggressive as a persona to tackle all the challenges thrown at us vs just trying to go really fast on a flattop. That being said, we like to generalize which is'nt right I am sure there are some decent roadies out there, and I am sure there are some really uptight mtb'ers out there. But in my humble experiance, roadies seem to think its a sin to stop for a minute to help out a fellow cyclist. Everytime i have a technical issue or even if it only resembles a technical issue, be it on a fun ride, training ride or race almost every single person that passes offer assistance. If they mean it or not, or if i need it or not is irrelavant, its the fact that they are willing to stop help someone out, have a bit of a conversation and then once everyone is happy get back on the bikes, and train hard or race hard. Life did not come to an end. You probably ended up meeting someone and you cruize away with a smile on your face.

I think roadies ( and generalizing here) think they all have a chance to be in the top 5 in every single race, and they try to live and train with that mentality. Hence getting off the bike to help someone would do irreversable damange to their training like having their heart rate drop during a training session which as we all know is not ON! :) I think people should remeber cycling is first and foremost supposed to be a fun social event. And the better you get you should not loose that mentality.

Maybe its becuase i ride for fun, race for fun, that I have this opinion, but reality hit me even before i bought my bike, I will never ever be in the top 10 and I wont try and act like i should be there. And in cycling in my view if your not a top 10 candidate, it simply just doesnt make a difference if you come in 11th of 600th in a race.

Thought I was seeing things when I logged into the Hub and saw my name under the Active Topics. Glad I could help, Dangle. Did you manage to get home okay?

Mandibles is one of my most favourite peeps in the world. About 20 months ago, I managed to lose my car keys are the Bike Park. To make matters worse, my phone's battery died, and I couldn't remember anyone's number. I switched on my laptop and posted something about being stranded. Within minutes, I had a PM from Dibles to say that she was coming through from Centurion to fetch me, take me to my house in Benoni to fetch the spares, then and drag my irresponsible ass back to the Bike Park to get my car.

Not many peeps would go out of their way for peeps like that.

OK WOW! That is SERIOUSLY decent of her. Moment of self introspection on my part since there is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever do that for a stranger.
