Coenie, it really comes to the fact that road death's in SA are way to high.

This can easily be changed by obeying the simple rules. Stopping at red lights is one of those rules. It should not matter what mode of transport. Robots are not stop streets.

Also cyclists have a bad rep of being a world to themselves. This must change. In this particular case they are an international pro team (from what I understand). As a pro team they should very much be leading by example. As a visiting pro team they should be respecting the road rules even more !!!

The only reason they did not get to go through more red lights was that there was traffic moving across them, otherwise they would have done more.

You guys are missing the point.

One cyclist jumps a red light...

one cyclist litters...

one cyclist gives a motorist the finger...

etc

then ALL cyclist are bad, law braking, bad behaved and ill tempered hooligans in they eyes of the public.

We all look the freeking same on the bike anyway!

If we dont sort out our crap amongst each other, who will?

Gheeez guys .... I can not believe some hubbers are trying to defend crossing red lights (! ?).

Not only is it against the law it pizzzes off the motorist who are then more aggressive to cyclists.

Yeh, I also find it a pain, and it looks safe to cross, and it keeps my avrg speed up, and...and BUT its law and others watching you break the law makes then psst with you.

You have explained it by your example of taxis - everyone sees them breaking laws, and everyone complains about them..yes, you too....so the same applies to cyclist....they become the bad guys (and in fact are when jumping lights).

Next topic is the littering . . why do so many cyclist find it easy to carry full bottles and full GU,Wasp,Hammer etc sachets ...but when they are empty they are too heavy and must be dumped on the road side !

Got so psst off in the Burger to see the ar$eholes in the bunch doing this - if you were no 1241 - you and your Buddy don't deserve to be on our roads.

I see what you are trying here, but I am not seeing how only targeting cyclist will make a difference...What about the dude commuting on the wrong side of the road..he does not read this and will never change and he also ads to the cyclist having a bad name.

In my mind, cyclist have a bad name, people driving with hats, using cellphones etc etc etc etc....then there are also Taxis.

I think that we should apply the darwin logic, if I ride without a helmet, my problem, no-one elses.

Anyway, maybe just me getting tired off all the moans regarding cyclist....

I'm with Slowbee. And yeah, I'm aware there's a truckload of other problems out there as well.

But it's these buggers (since this is close to a family show) that create the impression that we think we owe the road. And it's that impression that endangers me every time I'm out there, whether I'm obeying the law or not.

Coenie, all the whining about riders without helmets etc etc I agree, and I was wary about posting this on here as I dont want it to be a whine. I want it to be positive. Thats why I asked about getting hold of the team people and letting them know.

Small steps will hopefully make a big difference.

Slowbee, i'm with you on this one...TRY and make a difference by geting hold of the team captain / sponsor and EXOPLAIN to them how YOU/ WE / SA local cycling community would like to make cycling safer; change peeps perceptions etc etc. maybe they will understand...I'd be very interested to hera their reply...

Maybe send this request through official PPA / Cycling SA channels?

Where is everyone getting these dumb ideas from?

It is illegal to jump a red light

It is illegal to ride on the wrong side of the road

It is illegal to litter

It is illegal to ride without a helmet

It is illegal to ride on a national highway

It is illegal to murder someone else

Stupidity or ignorance of the law is not a legal defense.

You can not sit there say, "oh i did not know that there was a law against killing people... that irritate me"

As a follow up - I have recieved an email from the sponsors of the team. They apologised and said they have asked the sport director to speak to the team as they were not aware of the reputation cyclists have in SA. They also said it was a young team who had never been to SA before. They also said when they were out on the road they would be watched more closely by the team director.

Objective achieved.
