I'm in the process of buying a Trek Gary Fisher Hi Fi Pro and went into Cyclelab Fourways today to weight it, FWIW stock standard without pedals a 17.5 (Medium) weighed 12.51 kg. This is with standard tyres and tubes. Groupset spec level is XT 3x10 and some Sram X9.

Once my finances have recovered I intend upgrading to the lighter wheelset that comes standard on the Superfly and run them with Race King 2.0 UST and keep the stock ones as my spares.

Does anyone have this bike (or similar) and what are your impressions/comments?

My next bike will be a anthem 29, love my anthem x 26 one more upgrade run and she is where i want her to be then its building up a 29'er. I will however never go back to a HT, i ride trails mostly and i ride more for fun than races. Wont say wheight is not an issue for me since my anthem is on a serious diet at the moment. But hey if the bike is a kg heavier you wont even notice that unless your a serious race snake.

I love my Anthem 29er - Fantastic bike.

Sorry it is a 29er and the price is around 31K with a service plan. A little more than the Giant Anthem 29 but I like Trek/GFisher brand and technology more...

The Fischer Hardtails are great... but; I've seen softails, both alloy and carbon, with repeatedly loose linkage, very flexy backends and in quite a few instances this has lead to warranty issues with them... not exactly what you want on any bike. There's a bunch of info out there on forums about this.

I'd obviously be quite interested to read them, mind posting a link?

No Flaming me please. I started this post saying the GF hardtails are great bikes.

First page on a Google search - Ovalized bearing sockets (typically the carbon bikes, but also linkage on some alloy bikes), cracks on swingarms and seat tubes (carbon)

There has been a bunch of stuff written about the problems.

Interesting thanks.

That's exactly why I prefer aluminum for MTB frames and components, also the bike I'm looking at is the 2011 model which apparently (according to shop assistant...) has a few minor changes over the 09/10 frame or bike or material used, cant remember exactly what he was saying as I was preoccupied looking at and touching (stroking) the bike...lol

It would make sense for them to resolve the issue on the 2011 models. It would cost them too much if they didn't.

Have both,a 9.6kg 26'FS and a 9.2kg carbon 29"HT.Love them both but i have to say if i only had one bike it would be the 26"FS.The 29er is comfortable but at the end of the day it is still a ht.It all depends on where you ride. From the info you give i would go for the 26"FS,probably a Giant X3/X2.If you are stuck on the 29er again the Giant HT can't be beat for price and spec.I don't ride a giant but looking at the 2011 bikes nothing comes close.Again a good 26"FS bike will do everything well. The 29er HT will do some things well but still has some drawbacks.

Good luck, let us know what you get.

I agree with this 100%

I think I have decided on a 26", at the moment I am trying to choose between a Merida 96-3000 and a Merida 120-1500

Comments? Spanners in the works?

If I take the 120 and add R1000.00 I can put XT wheels on it
